Science and Spirit: A Critical Examination of Amos Yong’s Pneumatological Theology of Emergence

This paper is a critical examination of Amos Yong’s pneumatological use of emergence theory. In seeking to bridge the divide between the worldviews of science and Pentecostalism, Yong sees emergence theory as a fruitful mediating discourse. We will argue for the following: 1) the supernaturalism of Yong’s Pentecostal theology renders the concept of emergence obsolete; 2) the ontological independence of various types of spirits in Yong’s theology breaks his commitment to supervenience theory; and 3) Yong’s transference of scientific concepts into the normative discourse of theology is potentially problematic. These criticisms should be seen as a call for Yong to depart from emergence theory (and supervenience) in his admirable ambition to harmonize the spirit-filled imagination of Pentecostalism with the scientific culture of the 21st century.

The author considers whether and to what extent Hamm’s model of emergence can be included among those models in which we try to capture the processes of tradition. This would obviously be appropriate where a straightforward relationship between the identified causes and the outcome cannot be determined. Beyond Hamm’s thesis, the author also examines the views of other authors on the issue of emergence. The article is a proposal in terms of genre. Thus, it presents this option for discussion, but does not apply it to specific cases. Cases of emergence can be expected, for example, in the tradition of the interpretation of the Scriptures and its "effective history".

Lars Q. English’s book consists of an introduction, eight chapters and a short ending. The author shows how the latest discoveries of physics are changing thinking about the world, approving the occurrence of emergence. As a physicist himself, he combined the results obtained in physics with philosophical reflection, hence this book is worth recommending to students and graduates of science with philosophical tendencies.

Książka Larsa Q. Englisha składa się ze wstępu, ośmiu rozdziałów i krótkiego zakończenia. Autor ukazuje w niej jak najnowsze odkrycia fizyki zmieniają myślenie o świecie, aprobując zachodzenie emergencji. Sam będąc fizykiem, połączył wyniki otrzymywane w ramach fizyki z refleksją filozoficzną, stąd książkę tę warto polecić studentom i absolwentom kierunków ścisłych posiadających zapędy filozoficzne.

В статье анализируются теоретические основы и обобщаются научные взгляды на определение основных характеристик понятия «социально-экономическая безопасность» с позиции системного подхода и сложных динамических систем; систематизация основных свойств социально-экономической безопасности. Социально-экономическая безопасность как образец сложной нелинейной динамической открытой (стохастической) системы, которая зависит от структурных свойств, определяющих характеристики определенного состояния системы в любой фиксированный момент времени; динамические свойства, которые проявляются в работе системы и характеризуют изменения в ее состоянии, динамике внутренней и внешней среды. Но наибольший интерес исследования представляют интегральные свойства сложных динамических систем, возникающих в процессе взаимодействия системы с окружающей средой. Эти свойства включают синергетичность, эмерджентность, энтропийность, мультипликативность.

This article analyzes the theoretical foundation and generalization of scientific views on the definition of the essential characteristics of the concept of "social and economic security" system approach and operation of complex dynamic systems; systematization backbone properties of socio-economic security. Socio-economic security as a complex nonlinear dynamic open (stochastic) system, which suffers from structural properties that determine characteristics of a specific state of the system at any fixed point in time; dynamic properties, which are manifested in the operation of the system and characterize changes in its state, internal and external environment dynamics. But the greatest research interest are integral properties of complex dynamical systems, which appear in the interaction of the system with the ambient environment. These properties include the synergies, the emergence, entropy, multiplicative.

Artykuł analizuje podstawy teoretyczne i podsumowuje poglądy naukowe na temat definiowania i określenia podstawowych cech pojęcia „bezpieczeństwa społeczno-gospodarczego” z punktu widzenia podejścia systemowego. Ponadto dokonano systematyki podstawowych właściwości bezpieczeństwa społeczno-gospodarczego. Bezpieczeństwo społeczno-gospodarcze jest przykładem złożonego, nieliniowego, dynamicznego i otwartego (stochastycznego) systemu, który zależy od właściwości strukturalnych cech definiujących określony (konkretny) stan systemu w dowolnym ustalonym punkcie czasu. Właściwości dynamiczne ujawniają się w działaniu systemu i zmianach jego stanu oraz w dynamice środowiska wewnętrznego i otoczenia zewnętrznego. Rozważania autora koncentrują się wokół integralnych właściwości złożonych systemów dynamicznych, powstających w procesie interakcji z otoczeniem. Właściwości te obejmują m.in. takie zjawiska, jak: synergia, entropia, wzmacnianie.
