In this paper I would like to asses critically McDowell's argument to the effect that all experience is conceptualized and explain the role that this thesis plays within his general philosophical project. It has been argued that McDowell's conception of experience leads to idealism. I will demonstrate why this charge could be made and whether it is a charge which McDowell can adequately respond to. The paper will clarify McDowell's conception of conceptualized experience, and evaluate its efficacy for his philosophical aim. In order to accomplish these goals, the paper will contain the following two components: (1) a reconstruction of McDowell's position, and (2) its critical analysis. To reconstruct the position of McDowell, I will try (i) to establish his motives (i.e. avoiding the collapse into the Myth of the Given or coherentism), and (ii) the sources of inspiration for his thought and its and context (the Kantian categories of receptivity and spontaneity; the thought of D. Davidson, W. Sellars, G. Evans and Ch. Peacocke); (iii) and to explain his arguments (i.e. the general idea of the unboundedness of the conceptual, and the arguments against existence of non-conceptual content) and his defence against the charge of idealism. In order to critically analyse his position, I will try to evaluate it in terms of whether his defence against the objections to his proposal, in particular the charge of idealism, is successful.

Throughout many centuries artistic practice preceded theory and it is only with the development of the latter that one became conscious of the possible difference between the perception of works of art and that of the real world. According to R. Ingarden every work of art requires a certain actinity of the onlooker, in order to be read in an appropriate way. meanwhile there appear works not quide accomplished which assume a real co-operation of public in their creation. The view of U. Eco concerning an open work is outlined. Next there are given some examples of closed (finished) works created in the twentieth century: a) such ones as try to present something which, in principle, cannot be visualized; b) such as admit various interpretations. In turn, there are given some examples of open works which require an active behaviour of the percipient (and sometimes of elements) to their very existence. The article is ended by a comment that participation is, by no means, renouncement of a contemplation of works.
It is a commonplace assumption that there are realities and types of experience words are just not able to handle. I find the recourse to ineffability to be an evasive tactic and argue that there is inherently nothing beyond words and that this fact has ethical implications. I offer three theoretical considerations in support of my claim. The first two deal with the infinite nature of language itself, as understood first in Chomsky and then Derrida. The third deals with the linguistically structured nature of human experience. Expanding on Heidegger, I then draw some ethical implications from language’s inexhaustibility.

The following considerations concern Peter Kivy’s theory of musical expressiveness. Kivy integrates seventeenth and eighteenth – century theories with recent ones and he shows how emotive description of music may be intelligible both for a layperson and for a musical scholar. This theory suggests that criteria of musical expressiveness can be identified with those of human expression. Kivy proves that emotive description of music can be understood as clearly as emotive depiction of human behaviour. American philosopher concludes, that his theory provides universal grounds for the emotive description and criticism of music.
Stating that experience is the testing ground for scientific theories is undoubtedly a sort of truism. In the case of the investigation of human perception, however, it is worth pinpointing and understanding exactly what kind of experience science must avail itself of. Cherishing and taking into account the lessons learned from Goethe’s Farben-lehre, Ewald Hering inaugurates a type of phenomenology which believed in the fertili-ty of the connection between the phenomenological description and the empirical inves-tigation. The direction indicated by Hering will be embraced by important authors of non-Husserlian phenomenology in the first three decades of the twentieth century: Carl Stumpf, Karl Bühler, the Gestaltpsychologie of Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka, to name a few. This paper intends to show the interest and topicality of this approach.
Artykuł przedstawia koncepcję religii przeżywanej, która odpowiada współczesnym formom przeżywania sacrum. Ponowoczesność kładzie nacisk na doświadczenie religijne, często indywidualne, poza instytucjonalizacją kościołów. Koncepcja religii przeżywanej wychodzi naprzeciw nowym formom sacrum podkreślając m.in. znaczenie ucieleśnienia, dyskursu, materialności i form czuciowych w doświadczeniach religijnych. Koncepcja religii przeżywanej koncentruje się na człowieku praktykującym religię, jednak pomija kwestie transcendencji, prawdy i skutków nadprzyrodzonych.

The article presents the concept of a lived religion, which corresponds to modern forms of experiencing the sacred. Postmodernity emphasizes religious experience, often individual, apart from institutionalization of churches. The concept of a lived religion complies with new forms of the sacred stressing, among others, the meaning of embodiment, discourse, materiality and sensational forms in religious experiences. The concept of a lived religion focuses on a person practicing religion, however, ignoring the issues of transcendence, truth and supernatural effects.

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę naszkicowania możliwych kierun-ków badań nad książką i biblioteką w utworach literackich, których daty powstania dzieli znaczna rozpiętość czasowa, nawiązują jednak do wspólnych ram topogra-ficznych. Są to ramy rzeczywistości drohobyckiej, prezentowane w opowiadaniach i powieściach Iwana Franki, Antoniego Stanisława Muellera, Brunona Schulza, An-drzeja Chciuka, Henryka Grynberga i Erwina Schenkelbacha. Analizowane utwory cechuje rozbudowany profil auto/bio/geo/graficzny odzwierciedlający historyczne, artystyczne oraz kulturowe doświadczenia homo localis. Motywy książki, biblioteki i lektury pokazane zostały w perspektywie transformacji indywidualnej pamięci autobiograficznej w pamięć kulturową o odpowiednich dominantach semiotycznych, aksjologicznych i antropologicznych.

This article is an attempt to outline the possible directions of research on the book and the library in literary works whose dates of creation are divided by a considerable timespan, but which refer to the common topographical framework. In the context of this article these are the frames of Drohobych reality, as presented in the stories and novels of I. Franko, A. S. Mueller, B. Schulz, A. Chciuk, H. Grynberg and E. Schenkelbach. The analyzed literary works are texts with an extensive auto/bio/geo/graphical profile, reflecting various historical, artistic and cultural experiences of homo localis. The book, library and reading motifs have been depicted in the perspective of the transformation from individual autobiographical memory into the cultural memory with the appropriate semiotic, axiological and anthropological dominants.
Between phantasy and reality. Some comments to Dichterleben written by Heinz Piontek The novel by Heinz Piontek Dichterleben is not an autobiographical novel. Nonetheless the article tries to find correlations between statements stated by the novels character Reichsfelder and the opinions of Piontek, written by himself in his essays and interviews. The article also highlights the tendency Pioteks to “reproduce” the belonging to literary prose or lyric texts, motives and “linguistic pictures” in Dichterleben and to process them. Above that the article shows how close the phantasy and reality are connected together. It is also an attempt to show which component of the novel is most important.
