This is an overall review of the distinctive qualities of the fiction of Kornel Filipowicz (1913-1990), writer of short stories, novels, scenarios, but also a poet. This reassessment is based on his short of stories published in the 1970s and 1980s (ie. a total of thirteen volumes of fiction). The article points to the poetics of the epiphany as the key interpretative model for Filipowicz's fiction and attempts to describe its existential nature against a range of philosophical and cultural contexts. The texts discussed in the article mark the major stages in the development of Filipowicz's writing technique, illustrate his imaginative use of various points of view and of various genres in the construction of a short story, and, last not least, exemplify the wide range of his themes and interests. The texts offer a representative sample of the distinct essence of Filipowicz's art of story-telling.
