The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the variables need for structure and reading comprehension skill in a foreign language. Specifically it aims to identify differences in the scores of examined variables in the following categories: foreign language (EN, DE) and faculty (pf, ff, fpv, combi). For this reason, research was carried out in which 221 university students at CPU in Nitra participated. The PNS scale (Thomson et al., 2001) and tests of foreign language competence were used. The results showed that desire for structure correlates with reading comprehension skill negatively in the case of students of the Faculty of Arts. Need for structure correlates with study years of foreign language negatively in the case of students of the Faculty of Education. Statistically significant differences were proven in personal need for structure and response to lack of structure between the students of the Faculty of Arts and Natural Sciences.

The submitted paper deals with some lexicographical aspects of the process of foreign language teaching. It focuses on the contemporary situation in lexicographical research, deals with the educational role of a dictionary, describes a layperson´s relationship to a dictionary, addresses the issue of collocations and phraseologisms and discusses the phenomenon of the so called language common sense competence.

The work concentrates on the aspect of cultural understanding in effective communication as an inseparable part of second/foreign language acquisition with the focus on interrelationship between language and culture. This subject “brings together research in anthropology and social cognition, as well as second language learning, acquisition, and teaching” (Hinkel, Eli. 1999. Culture in Second Language Teaching and Learning) and the attempt of the paper is a brief introduction to the trends in research on intercultural communication in the last two decades and mentioning some of the author's findings in the field of intercultural communication as the result of seventeen year work experience in multinational environment including the research perspectives in the definition of the position of Slovak culture within the concept of general cultural differences characterized “from outside”, by the members of other culture groups – nations and introducing the hypothesis that foreign language learners equipped with the basic knowledge about cultural specifications within pre-defined categories of intercultural differences feel more comfortable in communication with the native speakers in the foreign language and express lower level of possible culture shock frustrations.

The aim of the paper is to summarize and characterize the contributions in the Slovenská reč journal that have covered the issue of Slovak language teaching in the journal’s 90-year history. We analyse 82 contributions related to the teaching of Slovak at all stages of school education. This mostly comprises teaching Slovak as a mother tongue; scant attention is also paid to Slovak as a foreign language. The analysis shows that the development of opinions on Slovak language teaching reflects not only the linguistic and pedagogical thinking of the time, but also the historical milestones that Slovak society has gone through over the past ninety years. This is also related to the intensity of interest in the issue of teaching. In the Slovak Language journal, the issues of teaching Slovak were most intensively addressed in the period from the founding of the journal in 1932 to 1955, when a total of 69 articles were published. Only 13 articles have been published in the past sixty-seven years. The interest or rather the lack of interest in teaching issues has had specific causes and manifestations in each period.

The Slovak official anthroponymic system consists of two functional members – first name and surname. The choice and registration of the first name in Slovakia is regulated by law. In the past, it was possible to register only the so-called official form of the first name, which respected the pronunciation, spelling and grammar principles valid in standard Slovak. The list of these basic neutral first names contains the book “Vyberte si meno pre svoje dieťa” /Choose a name for your child (1998) by M. Majtán and M. Považaj. However, some of them were used in other forms than codified. In accordance with the applicable laws, foreign language first names and other foreign language equivalents of such first names, which already have a domesticated form, is now possible to register. The paper deals with the analysis of more obvious spelling problems of first names, which caused these changes and which resulted from registry records and language practice. In particular these problems concern the pronunciation of long and short vowels in already domesticated standard first names, the form their notations and the creation of diminutives and possessive adjectives from foreign first names and other foreign language equivalents. The author focuses especially on capitalization in first names.

The paper focuses on analysing speech acts in the process of formulating requests in the ‘category width’ cognitive style in a foreign language and native language. We particularly focus on identifying the relation between politeness factors used by broad, medium broad and narrow categorizers in using speech acts of request in a foreign language and native language. Politeness factors are divided into social factors: attention getters, the listener’s (direct formulation of requests) and speaker’s perspective (indirect formulation of requests) and expressive factors: pre-sequences, post-sequences, mitigating devices and minimizers. Our research was carried out on a sample of university students of English, German and Spanish. It is remarkable that narrow categorizers use politeness factors on a larger scale in foreign language than in their native language and broad categorizers use politeness factors more extensively in their native language. Additional research results are discussed in the present paper.

The article presents the results of the pre-research of the future thesis Linguistic interference of Slovak and French languages by Francophone speaker with a partial competence in Slovak language from a pragmatic point of view. The pre-research was realised by means of a survey conducted from 04/08/2015 to 03/11/2015. The survey involved questions of sociolinguistic character but also exercises testing grammar of 63 respondents of levels A1, A2, B1 and B2 in Slovak language. The influence of French language on Slovak syntactic constructions was observed particularly in verbal system of Slovak language. That is also why we introduced the term of verbal interference. A negative transfer from French verbal system is found in Slovak sentences produced by Francophone learners. The theory of speech acts is associated to the verb and also the theory of intention of verbal action which are explained in the text.
