In 2007 the realisation of the statutory target of the National Heritage Board of Poland, associated with the gathering and availability of information concerning museum studies, entailed the implementation of a base related to good museum practices. The objective of the project in question is the promotion of the best Polish museums and applied solutions, which may be adapted to other institutions. Among the ca.1 000 museums in Poland the authors of the project selected 221 as the recipients of a special poll. 111 institutions forwarded responses. The factors and undertakings listed by the museums, and decisive for their originality, include: a professional approach to tourists (Castle Museum in Malbork), permanent exhibitions addressed to kindergarten-age children (Natural History-Hunt Museum - department of the National Museum of Agriculture in Szreniawa), realisation of the 'accessible museum' - the education of variously handicapped persons, including the establishment of a Touch and Feel Gallery for the blind, tours of exhibitions conducted in sign language, the elimination of architectural barriers, publications in Braille (Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola), and a universal application of multi-media techniques (Warsaw Uprising Museum). In certain cases, the museum proves to be the best source of assorted information in an entire region (Town Museum in Nowa Sól).The Internet page of the Historical Museum of Gdansk - the Uphagen ouse - possesses a 'camera online' option: thanks to 16 cameras the visitor may tour the museum interior without leaving his home. The Regional Museum in Torun offers a son et lumiere spectacle featuring a model of Torun in about 1500. The Museum -Palace in Wilanów possesses audio-guides - 45 mp3 players, headphones and memory cards with three language versions - which make it possible to tour the permanent exposition independently. All the museums which took part in the poll offer museum lessons, i. a. experimental archaeology workshops (Archaeological Museum in Biskupin), an educational programme entitled 'In search of our roots' (Museum of the Writings and Music of the Kaszuby-Pomeranian Region), art conservations courses (Sub-Carpathian Museum in Krosno) and workshops intended for the handicapped (Regional Museum in Stalowa Wola). In the opinion of the institutions involved in the poll, the effective functioning of museums calls for such indispensable factors as: the introduction of order into the archives and their systematic upkeep, own conservation workshops, digitalization of the collections (Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum in Lódz), long-term development (Historical Museum of Cracow)), cooperation with the direct environment (Museum Palace in Wilanów), permanent training of the scientific staff (Central Maritime Museum), and resistance to excessive commercialization which, as a rule, destabilises basic museum activity (Museum of First Piasts in Lednica).
