Special forces are the elite of modern armed forces. Both the United States and the Republic of Poland have special operations forces that have repeatedly cooperated with each other in training and combat operations. The aim of this study is to examine and describe the similarities between selected special operations units of the United States and the Special Mission Unit GROM on the basis of comparison of corresponding formations. The units considered by the author as their counterparts were compared based on four categories: 1) purpose, 2) unit’s history and development in the initial period, 3) contemporary organization, 4) selection and training.

Współcześnie wojska specjalne są elitą sił zbrojnych. Zarówno Stany Zjednoczone, jak i Rzeczpospolita Polska dysponują siłami operacji specjalnych, które wielokrotnie współpracowały ze sobą w ramach szkoleń i działań bojowych. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przeanalizowanie i wskazanie podobieństw pomiędzy wybranymi jednostkami specjalnymi Stanów Zjednoczonych a Jednostką Wojskową GROM na podstawie porównania odpowiadających sobie formacji. Jednostki uznane przez autora za swoje odpowiedniki zostały porównane w czterech kategoriach: 1) przeznaczenie, 2) historia powstawania i rozwój w początkowym okresie istnienia, 3) aktualna organizacja, 4) selekcja i trening.

Units of Special Operations Forces – in particular Special Missions Units, or “Tier One” – are intended for the execution of operations that are critical for national security policies and strategies. Very often they operate independently and have a wider legal scope than that of the domestic armed forces. Several countries have managed to gain significant practical experience and develop units of this type. They include the United States, the United Kingdom, Israel, Germany, and Poland, which also has some experience in using special operations to achieve the objectives of national security. Examples include the use of “Wawelberg’s destructors” during the Silesian Uprisings, or the contribution of the Home Army Silent Unseen Paratroopers to the construction of the underground state. In 1990, after Poland regained full subjectivity, SMU GROM was established, a formation created to implement the state’s policy and strategy using the military option. One of the more interesting examples of the use of this unit is Operation “Little Flower”, carried out in former Yugoslavia in 1997. .

Jednostki sił operacji specjalnych, a szczególnie tzw. jednostki misji specjalnych lub poziomu pierwszego, są przeznaczone do realizacji zadań krytycznych dla polityki i strategii bezpieczeństwa państwa. Bardzo często działają samodzielnie w prawnie szerszym zakresie niż siły zbrojne. Doświadczeniami praktycznymi oraz formacjami tego typu dysponują m.in. Stany Zjednoczone, Wielka Brytania, Izrael i Niemcy. Polska również posiada doświadczenia w użyciu operacji specjalnych do realizacji celów polityki bezpieczeństwa państwa. Można przytoczyć takie przykłady, jak wykorzystanie „destruktorów Wawelberga” w okresie powstań śląskich czy wkład Cichociemnych Spadochroniarzy Armii Krajowej w budowę Polskiego Państwa Podziemnego. W 1990 r., po odzyskaniu przez Polskę pełnej podmiotowości, stworzono formację przeznaczoną do realizacji polityki i strategii państwa z wykorzystaniem opcji militarnej. Była to GROM. Jednym z ciekawszych przykładów wykorzystania tej jednostki jest operacja Little Flower przeprowadzona w byłej Jugosławii w 1997 r.

The aim of this this study is to depict the process of shaping and development of special forces in the Polish historical space since 1918 as well as to illustrate the need for special forces to function as a guarantor of international and national security. The research method used in this study is primarily an analysis in the form of an in-depth study of Polish literature on special forces and special units, as well as synthesis, induction and a comparative method.
