The theme of holiness has been present in the teaching of the Church from the very beginning of her existence. A number of cultural, civilization or technological changes result in the formation of new guidelines for sanctity. The following analysis is an attempt to formulate some of them which concern technological development. The main purpose of this article is to find an answer to the question: How to manifest holiness in social media? The main message is based on the Church teaching on holiness, especially on Gaudete et exsultate, the latest papal document presenting this issue. Subject analysis of the materials (the Church teaching) has allowed the authors to suggest specific guidelines regarding holiness in social media.

The Adhortation "Gaudete et exsultate" appeared in Rom 19. 03. 2018. In this document the Pope Francis invites all members of the Catholic Church to return to the path of sanctity. The Holy Father recalls often the biblical texts, related to the theme of vocation to sanctity. Generally, they are 182 biblical texts, among them 109 direct quotes. The article analyzes how the Pope Francis discusses these texts. The Teaching of Pope is different to a simple exegesis. His Explanation of the Bible is closely related to current problems of believers and today’s Church.

Adhortacja apostolska Gaudete et exsultate ukazała się w Rzymie w uroczystość św. Józefa, 19 marca 2018 roku. W dokumencie tym papież Franciszek zaprasza wszystkich członków Kościoła Katolickiego do powrotu na drogę świętości. Ojciec święty przywołuje często teksty biblijne dotyczące tematyki powołania do świętości. W sumie w dokumencie powołuje się na 182 teksty biblijne. Aż 109 z nich posiada formę bezpośredniego cytatu. W artykule tym omówiono sposób doboru i przesłanie związane z przywoływanymi tekstami biblijnymi. Nauczanie papieża różni się zasadniczo od zwykłej naukowej egzegezy biblijnej. Papieskie wyjaśnianie Biblii jest ściśle związane z aktualnymi problemami wierzących i współczesnego Kościoła.

The last papal document on holiness is the Apostolic Exhortation of Pope Francis Gaudete et exsultate (GeE) from 2018. Surprisingly, the Pope’s explicit statement in the introduction is that the document does not intend to define holiness. The reasons are in all probability related to the pastoral and encouraging character of the document. Despite the recommendations of the Pope, the author of this paper presents the hypothesis that the document nevertheless contains a certain defining strategy. It is not, however, a classic form of definition (essential or nominal) that contains the necessary and sufficient conditions. This interesting strategy is philosophically described by another approach, the theory of family resemblances of Ludwig Wittgenstein (from his Philosophical Investigations). Interestingly, the application of the non‑essential approach to the definition of holiness turns out to have potential. The author of this paper does not claim that Pope Francis intentionally uses Wittgenstein or the theory of family resemblances, but rather that reading GeE with this methodology is comprehensible and provides meaningful results.
