Artykuł poświęcony jest problemom gospodarki wodnej, a w szczególności analizie wyników badań dotyczących kosztów pozyskiwania wody dla odbiorców w polskich miastach w latach dziewięćdziesiątych oraz analizie czynników wpływających na te koszty.

Water supply process includes water abstraction, water treatment services, water distribution network. City inhabitants, industrial units or individual production units relay on the process to get water for their use. Empirical data have indicated that individual cost of water supply strongly depends on the size of both industrial units and the city area. The city size can affect the cost in two opposing ways; positive as together with the increase in area the efficiency of the supply network utility increases, or negative as the increase in area means longer distances of the water distribution network to cover.
