In my paper I discuss as many as 570 Cretan river names, which may derive from Modern Greek appellatives which denote features of water and river-bed. This group of hydronyms represents 12,2% of all the modern hydronyms of the island (4666 names). The following Greek adjectives are highly productive in Cretan hydronymy: βαθύς ‘deep’ (60 times – 10,5%); κρυγιός, κρύος ‘cold’ (40 – 7,0%), ξερός, ξηρός ‘dry’, μεγάλος, μέγας ‘big, great’ and κακός ‘bad, evil’ (all 21 times – 3,7%). The similar (but not identical) productivity is observed in the Polish hydronymy.
