The article Society, Individual, and Alienness in the Context of Modernity and Liquid Modernity. The analysis of Guillermo del Toro’s „The Shape of Water” Inspired by Zygmunt Bauman’s Thought analyses Guillermo del Toro’s eponymous movie, addressing Bauman’s theories of modernity, liquid modernity, and the place of the Other in the society. The issues depicted in the Oscar-winning film shall be examined as particularly relevant to the contemporaneous society’s turbulent problems and anxieties—and, at the same time, to the subgenre of urban fantasy, similarily steeped in the familiar urban space despite its supernatural tone. What remains unanswered, however, is whether Bauman’s theory has been employed purposefully (even if subconsciously) by the director, or whether it might be so deeply anchored in the everyday discourse that it has become non-negligible in any contemporary social debate.

Celem artykułu jest przeniesienie kategorii realizmu magicznego na grunt badań filmoznawczych. Zostały tu przytoczone najważniejsze literaturoznawcze koncepcje teoretyczne dotyczące tej tendencji oraz refl eksje na temat realizmu i fantastyki w filmie. Dalszą część rozważań stanowi zaprezentowanie na wybranych przykładach trzech nurtów związanych z omawianym zjawiskiem. Są to adaptacje literatury, fi lmy z obszaru kina autorskiego oraz odrębna kategoria obrazów balansujących na granicy rzeczywistości i fantastyki, niewłaściwie zaliczanych przez laików do realizmu magicznego.

The article’s idea is to transfer the categories of magical realism to film studies . Major theoretical literary concepts concerning this tendency are quoted , as well as contextual reflections on film realism and fantasy. The next part of the paper constitutes the presentation of three distinguished trends related to the discussed phenomenon on chosen examples. These are literary adaptations, films from the amateur cinema field and a category of pictures balancing on the line between reality and fantastic, inappropriately included into magical realism by amateurs.
