The authoress' essay emphasises the difficulties in acquiring a testimony of the Holocaust which, being a historic event, causes that it proves unfeasible to become one's own witness or witness to sufferings of the others. It also points out to the role of institutional framework of giving a testimony, in that it enables to express a testimony in the presence of a listener full of empathy. Theoretical reasoning is accompanied by an analysis of the case of a surviving child, for whom an expression of testimony enabled to recognise the shadow being cast by the past upon his life.
