The decree on the detailed rules of the voluntary register of works kept at the Hungarian Patent Office came into force in 2006. The entry into the voluntary registry of works can be requested in the case of works under copyright legislation, including the performances of related rights. Copyright protection comes into force automatically when the work is created. Therefore the author may find it difficult to prove his authorship or the time of creation as well as the original content and form of the work at a later date. The certification of the entry into the voluntary register of works, issued by the HPO, may provide a solution in such situations. This certification is an official certificate which must be acknowledged by all parties until its invalidity is proved. The issuing of the certificate does not imply new copyright or related rights. It only proves that the author entered the work in question - a copy of which or the work itself being attached to the certificate - into the voluntary register as his own work. It also proves that, at the time of issuing the certificate, the work in question existed in the form and with the content as it can be stated in the attachment. This certificate can be used in legal cases concerning authorship, copyright protection, copyright infringement and also in other cases, e.g. litigation related to the infringement of personal rights. This paper provides detailed information on the process of the entry into the voluntary register of works.

Over the past few decades, the Hungarian Patent Office (HPO) has gained extensive experiences in the field of patent search. The office staff - who have strong technical background - have obtained deep and up-to-date knowledge and expertise of applying various research procedures and carrying out patentability examination reports. In accordance with its responsibility of promoting intellectual property rights protection, but beyond the scope of its official tasks related to industrial property, the HPO offers various patent search services to business partners on a contractual basis. These services help business ventures as well as individuals find valuable information necessary to make patent-related decisions or in order to avoid patent-infringement risks and unnecessary costs. Through offering such services, HPO contributes to the objectives of the European Network of Patent Organisations. Since summer 2007, the range of services has included novelty search as well as novelty search with preliminary patentability report, preliminary patentability report, validity search and Freedom to Operate (FTO) search.

The homepage of the Hungarian Patent Office was launched in 1996, when the organisation celebrated its 100th anniversary. During the past ten years, the webpage underwent two major functional and structural reorganizations. The restructuring processes were made necessary, on the one hand, in order to comply with new rules related to the homepages of governmental organisations, on the other hand they reflected the ever widening scope of activities of the Office, including the efforts made in the area of awareness-raising concerning intellectual property rights. The use of the fairly comprehensive webpage, containing more than 12,000 pages has been increasing year by year. In 2007, 310,823 individually identified users and 2,230,000 downloads were registered on the webpage. The URL of the Hungarian version of the webpage is http://www.mszh.hu, while the English language version can be reached at http://www.hpo.hu
