In these portraits, the queen’s position is emphasised over Ferdinand’s compared to the portraits intended for Austria and later for the empire where different priorities prevailed. After Ferdinand I was crowned as King of the Romans in 1531, Anne’s role was diminished; the Habsburg presentation mainly focused on familial со- hesion, which means the concord between Ferdinand and his brother, Emperor Charles V, and on the introduction of the new generation of rulers. — It is difficult to estimate the extent to which Queen Anne actively shaped her image. Nevertheless, compared to some Renaissance female rulers, mostly dowagers and maidens who shaped their images in accordance with their more or less independent reigns, Anne’s contribution was less distinctive. Although Queen Anne lived by King Ferdinand’s side and was a caring mother of a large family, she did not lead an absolutely passive public life. She was Ferdinand’s deputy and advisor; Anne’s overall image in the Habsburg portrait presentation corresponds to this complex characteristic.

Její role tam ustoupila do pozadí po korunovaci Ferdinanda I. římským králem v roce 1531, tehdy habsburská portrétní strategie cílila především na zobrazení rodové svornosti, souladu mezi Ferdinandem a jeho bratrem císařem Karlem V., a na představení nové panovnické generace. — Není snadné definovat, do jaké míry královna Anna aktivně utvářela svůj obraz. Její podíl však není tak velký jako u některých renesančních panovnic, většinou vdov či panen, které formovaly svůj obraz v souladu se svým víceméně samostatným vládnutím. Královna Anna žila po boku krále Ferdinanda a byla pečující matkou početné rodiny, přesto nebyla zcela pasivní ve veřejném životě, byla Ferdinandovým zástupcem a snad i rádcem. Král podporu své choti ocenil mimo jiné tím, že nařídil, aby na jejich společném náhrobku byla ztvárněna s královským žezlem. During the period of over 50 years of its history (1867–1918), the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy played a significant role in power politics in the world and primarily in Europe. Considering its geographical features, i.e. its size and population figures, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy was viewed as one of the world great powers. This function came to an end abruptly when the Empire dissolved in 1918. Central European and Hungarian historians have for long been arguing about the reasons and causes of the dissolution of the Monarchy. This paper aims to contribute to this academic dispute by throwing light on several specific historical-geographical and political-geographical aspects of the event. This paper investigates the above issue from three different points of view. On the one hand, it examines how the Empire in a geographical sense shifted to the East. On the other hand, it offers an insight into the ethnic and cultural diversity of the Monarchy. Finally, the paper aims to analyze the Monarchy’s failed attempt at colonization.

Zniknięcie, rozpad czy też może rozpłynięcie się w niebycie monarchii habsburskiej w ciągu kilku ledwie ostatnich dni „wielkiej wojny” nie oznaczało, że czas i historia wyparowały bez śladu. Pozostało bowiem po niej bogate i różnorodne dziedzictwo. Tworzą go splecione z sobą – pamięć zbiorowa i pamięć kulturowa przeobrażające się z czasem w mitologię. W tej środkowo europejskiej, habsburskiej mitologii ważne miejsce zajmuje mit Galicji. Świadectwem jego istnienia i żywotności jest tyleż niespodziewane co intensywne pojawienie się jej przed kilkunastu w obszarze komercji. Było to możliwe skutkiem odwołania się do dziedzictwa, pamięci i mitu, nie zaś do elementarnej choćby wiedzy o rzeczywistości kryjącej się pod tym szyldem. Królestwo Galicji zostało zmiecione z zajmowanego niegdyś terytorium dwoma kataklizmami wojennym. Wszelako pamięć o nim, głęboko jak widać zakorzeniona, zdołała jednak przetrwać ten zły czas. Dziś żyje nadal, choć mocno przetworzona. Upływające lata wraz ze wszystkimi towarzyszącymi im dziejowymi wstrząsami dokonał jej swoistej dekonstrukcji, z której wyłonila się nowa, mityczna postać Galicji. Zaczęła ona żyć niejako własnym życiem,właściwie bez związku z oryginałem. A sferę, w której jej obecność jest dziś najbardziej widoczna stanowi właśnie szeroko pojęta komercja. Kultywowaniu aktualnej, komercyjnej głównie funkcjonalności Galicji rzadko towarzyszą refleksje nad sensownością czy też celowością pielęgnowania, bo tak w istocie się dzieje, jej mitologii. Czy korzyści materialne, bo zapewne takie istnieją, stanowią wystarczające uzasadnienie dla gloryfikowania w Polsce zaboru austriackiego?

The disappearance, breakup, or perhaps the dissolution of the Habsburg monarchy into nonexistence in the last several days of the “Great War” did not mean that time and history disappeared without a trace. For it left a rich and varied heritage that consists of intertwined collective and cultural memories that transform over time into a mythology. An important place in that Central-European, Habsburg mythology is taken by the myth of Galicia. Evidence of its existence and vitality is its emergence several years ago, as unexpected as it was intensive, in the commercial realm. That was made possible by falling back onto heritage, remembrance, and myth, and not by – even an elementary – knowledge of the reality under this banner. The Kingdom of Galicia was wiped out from the territory it used to occupy by the disaster of two wars. Yet a memory of it, evidently strongly rooted, managed to survive that unfavourable time and today it is still very much alive, even though much transformed. The time that has passed, together with all the historical tremors during that time, has resulted in a kind of deconstruction from which a new, mythical form of Galicia emerged. It began to live its own peculiar life which has hardly anything in common with the original. The realm in which its presence is best visible today is what can broadly be called “commercial use”. The cultivation of the current, predominantly commercial functionality of Galicia is only rarely accompanied by a reflection on the sense or reason for the cherishing of its mythology, which is what is actually taking place. Are the material benefits – because there must be some – a sufficient justification for the glorification of the Austrian partition in contemporary Poland?

This presented study focuses on determining the causes of the illness, courses of treatment, the preparation for the death and symbolic messages conveyed at the funerals of Ferdinand I, based on the dispatches of envoys, personal correspondence of the Imperial family, official correspondence of court dignatories and an iconographical analysis of the sources. Attention is also paid to the impact of the gradually deteriorating general health of the biological body of this Central European ruler in terms of a weakening of the sovereign’s grip on power and the exercise of his everyday regal duties between 1563 and 1564. At the same time, the chosen historical-anthropological approaches and concepts of symbolic communication make it possible to observe the creation of the image of the social body of the deceased emperor at the moment of his death on 25th July 1564 and during the final obsequies which took place thirteen months later, namely on 6th and 7th of August 1565 in Vienna and on 21th and 22nd August 1565 in Prague. During the display of his remains at a castrum doloris, the ceremonial funeral procession and the requiem mass, Ferdinand I entered the collective memory as a Christian knight, a wise and righteous ruler of extensive territories in Central Europe, where, after his biological death, his bereaved sons took over the ruling power by the grace of God. The dramaturgy of final farewells and the use of symbols in speeches celebrated loudly the continuous tradition of the Christian rule of the Habsburg dynasty.
