In this article, I make an attempt to elucidate the problem of violence in Foucault’s genealogy that, following Nietzsche’s genealogy, seems to be based on the concept of a conflict of forces. Thus, the war of forces that constitutes history is the first dimension in which the presence of violence can be described in Foucauldian philosophy. The second dimension refers to violence taken as the effect of an interplay between forces. Both aspects allow us to think on violence, not in terms of natural objects, but in terms of relations and simultaneously to challenge the established concept of violence as something necessarily related to brute force or aggression.

With her debut novel Außer sich (2017), Sasha Marianna Salzmann undertakes a journey through the history of the last hundred years and explores the themes of flight, migration, gender, the search for identity, and generational trauma through four generations. The plot centers on Alissa, called Ali, a woman in her mid-20s, who travels to Istanbul driven by the search for her twin brother Anton. Boundaries and their transgressions are at the heart of the novel. Gender boundaries are subverted in the form of transgender characters, geographical boundaries are transgressed through changes of place and time. Cultural and linguistic boundaries are concomitants of memory work that shifts in space and time. The article will focus on three limit-concepts essential to the novel: Geographical boundaries, temporal boundaries, and gender boundaries.

W swojej debiutanckiej powieści Außer sich (2017) Sasha Marianna Salzmann wybiera się w podróż przez historię ostatnich stu lat i ukazuje ją na przykładzie czterech generacji, podejmując tematy: ucieczki, migracji, płci, poszukiwania tożsamości oraz traum pokoleniowych. Główna bohaterka, ok. 25-letnia Alissa, zwana Ali, wyrusza do Stambułu w poszukiwaniu Antona, swojego brata bliźniaka. Granice płci podważają transpłciowi bohaterowie, granice geograficzne zostają przekroczone dzięki zmianom miejsc i czasu. Granice kulturowe i językowe towarzyszą operującej w przestrzeni i czasie pracy pamięci. Autorka artykułu skupia się na trzech istotnych dla powieści znaczeniach granic: granicach geograficznych/terytorialnych, granicach czasowych oraz granicach płciowych i indywidualnych.

Mit ihrem Debütroman Außer sich (2017) unternimmt Sasha Marianna Salzmann einen Streifzug durch die Geschichte der letzten hundert Jahre und thematisiert anhand von vier Generationen die Themen Flucht, Migration, Geschlecht, Identitätssuche und Generationstraumata. Im Mittelpunkt der Handlung steht die Mitte 20-jährige Alissa, genannt Ali, die getrieben von der Suche nach ihrem Zwillingsbruder Anton nach Istanbul reist. Grenzen und deren Überschreitungen stehen im Zentrum des Romans. Geschlechtliche Grenzen werden in Form transgeschlechtlichen Personen unterlaufen, geographische Grenzen durch Orts- und Zeitwechsel überschritten. Kulturelle und sprachliche Grenzen sind Begleiterscheinungen der in Raum und Zeit changierenden Erinnerungsarbeit. Der Artikel wird sich auf drei für den Roman wesentlichen Grenzbegriffe fokussieren: Geographische/territoriale Grenzen, zeitliche Grenzen, geschlechtliche und individuelle Grenzen.
