Many examples show that scientific research about climate change uses apocalyptic images and categories both to analyze the problem and to indicate possible solutions. Far from criticizing this approach the article takes this fact as an opportunity to build a bridge between climate research and religion: Pope Francis also uses apocalyptic categories in his ecological encyclical Laudato si’ when he confronts Christian faith with the challenges of the ecological crisis. The author of this article analyzes the encyclical in this perspective. Both in the papal setting of the problems and his perspective for solutions he is driven by the urgency and the magnitude of the global ecological devastation. It is not rational arguments from a distanced spectator’s perspective the Pope wants to contribute, but emotional concern and strong passion for sister earth crying and suffering. In difference to his predecessors Francis leaves the task of theological reflection to academic theology – in all freedom and responsibility. In a final part the article therefore indicates some main categories with the potential of deepening and continuation of Francis’ incentive.

Hope is a necessary condition of a good life, and a good life provides a basis for hope. Saint Thomas Aquinas distinguishes between hope as an emotion and hope as a virtue. The emotion of hope is a sensual quest, whose object is defined by four features: (a) it is a good; hope is thus distinct from fear, which refers to an evil; (b) it is a future good; hope is thus distinct from joy, which refers to a present good; (c) it is a good difficult to obtain; hope is thus distinct from desire; (d) despite difficulty, this good is obtainable; hope is thus distinct from despair. The virtue of hope is an attitude of the will, or a spiritual quest. The object of hope is a future good, which is attainable although with difficulty. Something is attainable for ourselves, or through ourselves, or through others. If we have hope that something is attainable for us with divine help, hope rests in God.

Cnota nadziei to postawa woli, tj. dążenia duchowego.

The joy of just living in covenant with YHWH and experiencing His saving action, expressed in Psalm 33 as “new song”. Throughout its history, Israel met with the power of words and the “advice” of God and became aware of his uniqueness. Also experienced God's people that are constantly present in caring providence of God providing protection and assistance to him. This comes to the fore in the expression of thought of God as the Creator and Lord of all history. No force or power will stand before the God of Israel. The people tremble before him, and nations live according to His laws and political plans. However, each military force is nothing before the One who sits on the throne in heaven. Psalm 33 does not have the eschatological character, and his pictures show currently running history and life as a mystery and a miracles in creative work and history. The examined psalm points to the final reign of God in the sense that human powers are transient, and the possession of this world turns increasingly to a new reality.
