In the publications of geographers, sociologists and architects, dealing with housing issues, commonly used terms are: housing environment and housing space. At the same time, the authors in their publications generally do not specify the scope of used concepts and dependencies between these terms. While in the literature there are definitions of the housing environment, there is no such conceptual scope for the term of residential space. Therefore, the aim of the study is to illustrate the approaches to understanding the scope of these basic concepts in literature, how to interpret the relationship between the two terms –housing environment and housing space and to propose a definition of the concept of housingspace and attributes characterizing it.

W publikacjach geografów, socjologów i architektów zajmujących się zagadnieniami mieszkalnictwa, powszechnie stosowanymi terminami są: środowisko mieszkaniowe i przestrzeń mieszkaniowa. Jednocześnie autorzy w swych publikacjach, generalnie nie precyzują zakresu używanych pojęć i zależności występujących między tymi określeniami. O ile w literaturze występują definicje środowiska mieszkaniowego, to brak jest takiego zakresu pojęciowego dla terminu przestrzeni mieszkaniowej. Celem opracowania jest ukazanie różnego podejścia w literaturze do zrozumienia zakresu tych podstawowych pojęć oraz interpretacja relacji między środowiskiem mieszkaniowym i przestrzenią mieszkaniową, a także zaproponowanie definicji pojęcia przestrzeni mieszkaniowej i atrybutów ją charakteryzujących.
