Scientific and martial arts’ tourism. The case study of the 3rd IMACSSS International Conference and Congress

Aim is a description of the World Congress of specialists in the field of martial arts and combat sports, belonging to the International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society (IMACSSS). It is both a review of scientific events and its analysis as an important event for martial arts tourism. What sub-form of the martial arts tourism was this 3rd World Scientific Congress of Combat Sports and Martial Arts? Method. This is a case study. Sources are analysed and the authors also advance the method of participant observation. It includes standard methodological ”humanistic coefficient” of Florian Znaniecki`s and content analysis of subject literature. Results. In Rzeszow there was a meeting of the leaders of scientific societies, editors of specialized journals, the main masters of martial arts schools, theoreticians, experts and empiric researchers. For some participants of the Congress it was martial arts tourism in its colloquial meaning, i.e. a situation when martial arts are a tourist attraction of the place. However, most of the participants of this Congress participated in it mainly for research purposes. A particular kind of travel for studying martial arts is a trip in connection with a scientific congress or conference which is devoted to ”martial arts sciences” (sub-form no. 7). Conclusion. The community of martial arts` researchers focused on martial arts IMACSSS thrives. Changing roles of hosts and guests in this type of scientific and cultural tourism is a result of organizational development and the increasing level (knowledge and skills). The described Congress was successful both for participants and organizers; it was an event that formed part of the martial arts history and the history of specialities: martial arts science/sciences.

Celem jest opis światowego kongresu specjalistów w dziedzinie sztuk walki i sportów walki, skupionych w organizacji IMACSSS. Jest to zarówno recenzja imprezy naukowej i jej analiza, jako wydarzenia ważnego dla turystyki sztuk walki. Jaką formą turystyki sztuk walki był ten III Światowy Kongres Naukowy Sportów i Sztuk Walki? Metoda. Jest to stadium przypadku. Analizowane są źródła, a autorzy realizowali również metodę obserwacji uczestniczącej. Uwzględniono normę metodologiczną “współczynnika humanistycznego” F. Znanieckiego i analizę treści literatury przedmiotu. Wyniki. W Rzeszowie spotkali się: liderzy towarzystw naukowych, redaktorzy wyspecjalizowanych periodyków, główni mistrzowie szkół sztuk walki, teoretycy, eksperci i badacze-empirycy z wielu krajów. Dla niektórych uczestników Kongresu było to turystyka sztuk walki w jej rozumieniu potocznym, czyli sytuacja, gdy sztuki walki stanowią atrakcję turystyczną danego miejsca. Jednak większość uczestników omawianego Kongresu uczestniczyła w nim głównie dla celów naukowych. Szczególnym rodzajem podróży dla studiów sztuk walki jest podróż związana z kongresem naukowym lub konferencją poświęconą „martial arts sciences” (kategoria VII). Wnioski. Środowisko badaczy sztuk walki skupione w IMACSSS dobrze się rozwija. Zmieniają się role gospodarzy i gości w tego rodzaju turystyce naukowej i kulturowej, co wynika z rozwoju organizacyjnego i wzrastającego poziomu (wiedzy i umiejętności). Opisany Kongres był sukcesem uczestników i organizatorów; był wydarzeniem, które wpisało się do historii sztuk walk i do historii specjalności naukowej martial arts science/sciences.

This report describes and reflects on the Fourth World Scientific Congress of Combat Sports and Martial Arts, which at the same time was the Seventh International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society Conference. This event took place on October 17- 19, 2018 at the facilities of the University of Rzeszow, and University of Law and Public Administration in Rzeszow, Poland. The event gathered about two hundred participants, representing academic centers, scientific societies and MA&CS-related institutions. Up to fifty studies on several scientific fields related to MA&CS were presented, showing the current diversity of this area of research. Workshops and demonstrations of MA&CS styles techniques were also part of the conference. All this diversity created a rich environment for cultural dialogue, scientific communication and transference of theoretical and practical knowledge. We suggest to further exploit the connections among the different scientific fields and MA&CS styles for future editions of the congress, as a way to improve the participants’ experiences.

Niniejszy raport opisuje i podejmuje refleksję nad Czwartym Światowym Kongresem Naukowym Sportów Walki i Sztuk Walki, który był jednocześnie Siódmą Międzynarodową Konferencją Naukową IMACSSS. Wydarzenie to miało miejsce w dniach 17-19 października 2018 roku na obiektach Uniwersytetu Rzeszowskiego oraz Wyższej Szkoły Prawa i Administracji Publicznej w Rzeszowie. Zgromadziło ono około dwustu uczestników reprezentujących ośrodki akademickie, towarzystwa naukowe oraz instytucji związanych ze sportami i sztukami walki. Przedstawiono rezultaty ponad pięćdziesięciu badań dotyczących kilku dziedzin naukowych związanych ze sportami i sztukami walk, pokazujących przy tym aktualną różnorodność tego obszaru badań. Podczas konferencji odbyły się warsztaty i demonstracje technik walki sportów i sztuk walki. Cała ta różnorodność stworzyła bogate środowisko dla dialogu kulturowego, komunikacji naukowej i przekazywania wiedzy teoretycznej i praktycznej. Autorzy tego krótkiego opracowania proponują dalsze wykorzystanie powiązań pomiędzy różnymi dziedzinami naukowymi i stylami sztuk i sportów walki w kolejnych edycjach kongresu, jako sposób na poprawę doświadczeń uczestników.

Scientific travel to Osaka: the next case study of martial arts tourism

Background. The issue is presented from the perspective of the concept of scientific tourism and martial arts tourism, as a manifestation of the process of the institutionalisation of the international community of martial arts researchers. Problem and Aim. The aim of this study is to describe and review the scientific event, a conference of two international scientific societies: The Japanese Academy of Budo and the International Martial Arts and Combat Sports Scientific Society (JAB and IMACSSS). Method. The basic method is participant observation by the author – a form of field study. In addition, factual material, pronouncements by the participants, and the subject literature are analysed. The third method used is a form of visual sociology adapted to analyse a tourist event. Photographs are presented in this study to illustrate the descriptions. Results. The article describes the journey, purpose, conduct and evaluation of the 6th International Conference of the IMACSSS, and the JAB 50th Anniversary Conference. The main objective of most participants was to attend these two conferences. Conclusions. The conference was a success for both organizers and participants. It was an opportunity to exchange most up-todate knowledge and research results. Arrangements for further joint initiatives to be implemented between different institutions were also made.

Podjęte tu zagadnienie jest przedstawione z perspektywy koncepcji turystyki naukowej i turystyki sztuk walki, jako manifestacja procesu instytucjonalizacji środowiska badaczy sztuk walki. Problem i cel. Celem tego studium jest opis i recenzja wydarzenia naukowego, jakim była konferencja dwóch międzynarodowych towarzystw naukowych – Japońskiej Akademii Budo (JAB) i IMACSSS – Międzynarodowego Towarzystwa Naukowego Sztuk Walki i Sportów Walki. Metoda. Podstawową zastosowaną tu metodą jest obserwacja uczestnicząca – rodzaj/ odmiana badań terenowych. Co więcej, analizowane są fakty i stwierdzenia uczestników, oraz literatura przedmiotu. Trzecią użytą tu metodą jest forma socjologii wizualnej zaadoptowana do analizy wydarzenia turystycznego. Zdjęcia są tu pokazane, jako ilustracja do głównego tekstu opisu. Wyniki. Została pokazana podróż, cel, program i ocena VI Międzynarodowej Konferencji IMACSSS oraz Jubileuszowej Konferencji 50-lecia Japońskiej Akademii Budo. Celem głównym większości uczestników był udział w tej konferencji i tym spotkaniu. Wnioski. Konferencja była sukcesem zarówno dla organizatorów, jak i dla uczestników. Była okazją dla wymiany najnowszej wiedzy i przedstawienia wyników badań. Zostały także podjęte ustalenia dotyczące dalszej współpracy pomiędzy różnych instytucjami.

Problem. The first goal is to describe and evaluate a scientific event, plus digressions (on some martial arts traditions) and observations. Then we look for answers to the problem question, what is the reason why specialists come to such a meeting, what attracts them. Is it the charm of the place or is it a strictly scientific purpose? Moreover, what does the analysis of the photographic material show? This is a contribution to knowledge about martial arts tourism. Method. The authors used visual sociology as the qualitative analysis method, analyzing approximately 200 selected photos. In addition, the qualitative methods recommended in the General Theory of Martial Arts were used: participant observation and broad discourse analysis. Results. The analysis of the photos confirms that the standard of the scientific event is maintained as well as its established, specific character. The scientific goal clearly dominated, but the arrival (or absence) of participants was influenced by many factors, the influence of which was not sought. The following were taken into account: the specific symbolism of the place, ritual roles and functions, scientific discourse, cultural dialogue, and social and organizational dimensions, which are typical for scientific and congress tourism. Conclusions. This is a factual report of another scientific event for fighting arts researchers. It was a successful conference with a high scientific level. Novel items) included: 1) parallel analysis of the example of martial arts, scientific and strictly cultural tourism; 2) description of the conference organized with direct participation after the pandemic break; 3) exchange of the latest knowledge - results of empirical research and theoretical findings from various scientific centers.

Ponadto, co wynika z analizy materiału zdjęciowego? Jest to przyczynek do wiedzy o turystyce sztuk walki. Metoda. A scientific and martial arts event in a new, pandemic situation; casus of one conference anno domini 2020

Problem and Aim. The aims were: 1) factography with the evaluation of the scientific event, 2) case study of the event in terms of the institutionalization of fighting arts research and martial arts tourism. Method. Qualitative methods were used: expanded discourse analysis, visual anthropology, autoethnography, and participant observation. The analysis included, inter alia, several dozen photographs. Results. The IMACSSS conference was described and reviewed as a scientific event that was organized in a hybrid mode, with direct and remote participation. The functioning of the scientific organization ten years after its establishment was determined. This mixed or hybrid conference was the first of its kind and combined with a sports event. Conclusions. It was an important event for the research community on fighting arts and was a success for the organizers. It can be expected that remote and hybrid conferences will continue to dominate for some time.

Problem i cel. Problem naukowy jest tu tożsamy z celem poznawczym. Chodziło o: 1) faktografię wraz z oceną wydarzenia naukowego, 2) studium przypadku wydarzenia pod kątem instytucjonalizacji badań nad sztukami walki i turystyki sztuk walki. Metoda. Zastosowano metody jakościowe: rozszerzoną analizę dyskursu, antropologię wizualną, autoetnografię i obserwację uczestniczącą. Analiza obejmowała między innymi kilkadziesiąt zdjęć. Wyniki. Konferencja IMACSSS została opisana i zrecenzowana jako wydarzenie naukowe zorganizowane w trybie hybrydowym, z udziałem bezpośrednim i zdalnym Określono stan funkcjonowania organizacji naukowej dziesięć lat po jej utworzeniu. Konferencja mieszana lub hybrydowa była pierwszą tego typu konferencją połączoną z wydarzeniem sportowym. Wnioski. Było to ważne wydarzenie dla środowiska naukowego zajmującego się sztukami walki i sukces organizatorów. Można się spodziewać, że jeszcze przez jakiś czas konferencje zdalne i hybrydowe będą dominować.

The 8th Conference of IMACSSS, Viseu, Portugal as a scientific event, including its importance for research into fighting arts and for martial arts tourism

Problem. The first goal of this paper is to describe and evaluate the Conference as a scientific event including digressions based on knowledge of certain national traditions and related insights. Next, the authors attempt to answer the research question, as to the reasons why specialists travel to and attend similar meetings, i.e, the features which attract them. More specifically, to what extent is it the charm of the place or the consideration for those persons hosting the event? In answering these questions, what results do the analysis of photographic material suggest? Methods. The authors have adopted visual sociology as a method of qualitative analysis, analyzing 14 selected photos. Furthermore, these researchers have employed participant observation, and the analysis of broad discourse as recommended in the General Theory of Fighting Arts. Result. Photo analysis confirms the preservation of the scientific standards of the event, and at the same time the event’s fixed, specific character. The scientific goal of the Conference was clearly dominant, with many unsolicited factors influencing the attendance or absence of participants. Instead, the symbolism of the place, ritual roles and functions, scientific discourse, cultural dialogue, and the social dimension of such gatherings in terms of the integration of its membership, were the features typical of scientific and congress tourism, in evidence at the Conference. Conclusions. This paper presents the factography of a fighting arts research event, namely the 8th Conference of IMACSSS. The authors evaluate the event to have been a success, achieving a high level of accomplishment by scientific standards. The Novum for this conference consisted of: 1) discussion panels concerning individual sub-disciplines; 2) reports on little-known old Polish martial arts traditions; and 3) exchange of the latest knowledge, the results of empirical research from various scientific centers. The locations and dates of the next two IMACSSS conferences have already been determined.
