Pragmatics of information retrieval (IR) languages as a sub-domain of natural language pragmatics has not been studied yet in depth. The authoress provides a brief discussion of the concept of linguistic pragmatics, attempts to define the pragmatics of information retrieval languages and describes two key concepts: adequacy and consistency of IR language application.
