The article presents Lisbon Strategy premises and goals for employment on UE territory, focusing especially on directives concerning EU employment rates (total, women’s and older workers employment rates). The analysis indicates that, compared with other EU countries, the situation in Poland in 2004–2009 was not an auspicious one for women, men or older workers (aged 55–64). The gap between projections for 2010 – 50% employment for older workers, works out for Poland to 18 percentage points; for women the figure breaks down to 7 percentage points while for men it is about 10 percentage points. A similar situation can be observed in Hungary and Italy. The analysis shows that changes in both the employment and unemployment rates in 2004–2009 in Poland, like those in the EU’s new member states, should be seen as positive.
