WEB-SITES OF INSTITUTIONS OF THE NAS OF UKRAINE; AN INDICATOR OF ITS INFORMATIZATION AND INTERNATIONAL INTEGRATION

Web-sites of 155 research institutions of the NAS of Ukraine are studied by disciplinary section (physics, mathematics. and technical fields; chemistry and biology; social fields and humanities), by the following criteria: effectiveness (web-site is effective/operable, or doesn't operate, or not available at all); availability of English version (English version is the only one, or full, or abridged, or none); display of international S&T cooperation (special section, references in various sections, none). The analysis reveals absence of a web-site in 59 institutions out of the 155 (more than 30%). Web-sites of another 13 have not been opened or were on reconstruction. Institutions not having a web-site are mostly those not belonging to the category of institute (botanic gardens, reserves etc.). Although 60% of the institutions have web-sites, nearly 45% of them have not been regularly up-dated. The most popular information displayed on web-sites is about history, structure and administration of an institute, followed by 'events', 'publications', 'main results'. However, sections devoted to international activity/cooperation/contacts are found in web-sites of 15 institutes only , while another 16 used to include it in other sections. By disciplinary field, that largest stock of information about international affairs is found in physics, mathematics and technical fields (21 institutions), followed by biology and chemistry (6) and social fields and humanities (4). English version is found in 75% of the surveyed institutions, and 5 have web-site in English only. Out of 19 institutes where English version is ansent, 11 work in social fields and humanities. As for displaying results, part of the institutes attempt to use web-site for their marketing; publication activity is displayed by nearly all the institutes, although in a different way, whereas presentation of main results can be found in only 10% of the institutions, and only one (Astronomic observatory) displays them in the form of a report.
