Human thinking is mostly language-independent. However, human information exchange is massively language dependent, therefore the process of information retrieval is obviously language dependent too. Natural languages are still not commonly used as information retrieval languages, as despite that the idea itself seems to be promising, it poses several serious problems as well. Nevertheless, there have been scientific researches and achievements targeting this domain since the early 90's. Traditional information retrieval languages have rather poor syntactic structure compared to natural languages. Many times, vaguely represented queries can be replied only by 'noisy' irrelevant answers filled with imperfect information. In this case, progress can only be expected from information retrieval languages with more versatile syntax, which can model not only discrete concepts (or their conjuncts), but their natural language relations as well. The paper is going to outline such a new type of information retrieval language with a better expressive power. The paper shows that there are knowledge representation languages which can faithfully represent the logical fine structure of natural languages, and to which both natural language texts and background knowledge (ontologies, thesauri) can easily (almost automatically) be translated, while the query itself can also be represented by the same language. A full explanation can be given by a step-by-step tracing of the generated answer.

The author discusses 2004-2009 NetTrack data on Internet users aged 15 through 17 and opinions on the information behavior of ‘digital natives' found in Polish and international literature. Youngsters' acquisition of computer and information skills is analyzed alongside obstacles encountered by young people searching for information on Internet.

A review of a book that deals with keywords in library practice. The return of keywords into library environment has caused many theoretical and practical problems. These issues include effectiveness of keyword use in labelling and retrieving information as well as their relation to different classic keyword languages and the natural language. The book presents a thorough introduction to keyword theory and practice as well as the author's opinions and reflections on the subject. Some important research questions, e. g. regarding the future of information retrieval languages, have also been asked.

The library catalog, as any other information retrieval system, is expected to provide its users with efficient methods of information search and retrieval. The authorerss attempts to evaluate the quality (understood as the comprehensiveness and precision of information retrieval) of online catalogs of small and medium-sized libraries using the following integrated library systems: MOL OPTIVUM, LIBRA 2000, PATRON, MAK and SOWA. The evaluation is based on the analysis of 93 OPACs of school, pedagogy, private university and public libraries. The following factors were taken into consideration: the quality of data, software and general information on the system and its content. The results of the research point to potentially low efficiency of analyzed OPACs as regards the comprehensiveness and precision of information they offer. .

The author discusses the way information retrieval languages need to be modified if they are to survive as tools for information arrangement and retrieval. The information retrieval environment and information retrieval languages are currently shaped and influenced by: the quantity of information searched and the appearance of new information objects; the change occurring in the behavior of information users; the pace of ongoing changes; undisputable domination of Internet. The most important conclusions involve the need for: the integration of information resources (first of all, within the World Wide Web); change in the way information retrieval vocabulary is presented (visualizations) with the possibility of transformation into, for instance, knowledge maps; the integration of metadata search and full-text search.
