The article examines two issues: the enormous significance of Roman Ingarden's book 'The Literary Work of Art' for the development of philosophical reflection on culture, and the reasons for which this theory has, to a great extent, become outdated. The reasons, in the authoress' view, lie mainly in the subsequent change of paradigm, the basic set of categories employed today in discussions on the relation between the text and the reader.
