The role of company libraries has radically changed over the last 10-15 years. Following the relatively static role of collecting and archiving the professional literature required by their authorities, they had to adopt a flexible, creative, dynamic role in information provision in order to give their company a competitive edge on the market. This case study presents with which methods, tools and shifts in approaches an 'Infoteka' based on previous corporate special libraries was successfully integrated into the knowledge management system of a large Hungarian corporation.

The Library of the Institute of Physics of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics has been providing high quality special library services over 40 years. The primary role of the Library is supporting the Institute's teaching staff, students and researchers. The automated cataloguing of the library collection was initially carried out in the MicroISIS system, but soon it became clear that the special needs of the library require a new, more appropriate integrated library system. The solution was a new software called BVi 3, developed within the Institute. The integrated system has been subject to major enhancements over the past few years. As a result, library users interested in various fields of physics can access the collection via the library website. The Library places great emphasis on the cooperation with other libraries, which is essential from the point of view of the efficiency of the services. The two most important partners are the KFKI Atomic Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and the National Technical Information Centre and Library which also operates within the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. The partner libraries are working on integrating their catalogues and creating a common searching interface in order to serve users more effectively.

Since 1999, the Central European University Library had been looking for a second generation integrated library system that would be more than a common database, that would be able to do more than just computerise manual or paper-based routines, and would enable library users to reach beyond the local information and knowledge base. After thorough searching and an invitation to tender, the Central European University Library purchased the Millennium integrated library system from Innovative Interfaces Inc. and started to use it in 2002. Millennium is a Web- and Java-based automated library system, and working with it is a unique experience in Hungary. The study is about Millennium and its adaptation to the needs of the Central European University Library.

Library Supply Distribution Co. (Konyvtarellato Kozhasznu Tarsasag - KELLO) carried out the modernisation of its services in the second half of 2004. The two main pillars of the modernisation were the conversion of the KELLO bibliographical database into the HunTeka integrated system, as well as the introduction of SAP. As a result of the integration of HunTeka and SAP, KELLO launched a new homepage and a range of enhanced services for its library customers as of Dec 1, 2004. The present article is an edited version of the presentation given at the Networkshop 2005 conference. It summarises the lessons learned from the switch to the new system, presents the new services and outlines the main areas of cooperation with SAP.

The first part of this study was published in the issue 3/2005 of TMT. The second part deals with the information services of Matav Rt. that are based on the OLIB integrated library system, but offer less complicated, more adequate search options for company staff than the OPAC interface used in library practice. User-friendly solutions are achieved by pre-defined query options and various viewing formats matching the special features of the information offered. The developers also made use of the options provided by the company's electronic communication system.

The authors are the developers of the TextLib integrated library system to which a country-wide professional meeting was dedicated at the Mogyorossy Janos Municipal Library in Gyula. The authors presented the latest features of TextLib that significantly contributed to the successful implementation of several large-scale library development projects, such as MOKKA (the Hungarian Shared Catalogue project), ODR (the National Document Supply Service), Koztaurusz (the thesaurus of Hungarian public libraries). It was a practical and effective solution to design the server programs in Linux environment, which ensures greater security in the data transfer via the multiple communication protocols connecting TextLib with external systems. The most important feature of the MOKKA - TextLib cooperation is that the integrated tools make it possible for simple and controlled import and export of bibliographic records completed with location data. The most important outcome of the development is that beside MOKKA, TextLib is able to connect with any other Z39.50-based server and with any TextLib WWW server. The integration of Koztaurusz, the Hungarian public library thesaurus into TextLib allows the direct use of the thesaurus in the retrieval of the bibliographic records. In this process, the system uses the UDC identifiers linked as indexes to one part of the lexical elements of the thesaurus.

The paper examines the problem of the computer-based searchability of databases containing both catalogue records and full-text documents. The question arises whether such old and prestigious classification systems as the Universal Decimal Classification should still remain in use in the age of ontologies, machine translation and natural-language context analysis? At the current level of the development of information technologies, the answer is: yes. The next question is, how can good quality controlled and natural-language search tools co-operate in the same search system? The first part of the paper presents the UDC system, as the most popular classification system also used in the countries of Central Europe. The following chapters deal with the differences between free text search solutions and search tools based on classification categories. The application of both types of searches in the same system means a great challenge for librarians. The paper offers one practical solution in the context of the ALEPH 500 integrated library system, a newly created search tool at the National Technical Information Centre and Library (BME OMIKK), operating at Budapest University of Technology and Economics. http://tmt.omikk.bme.hu/print.html?id=5074&issue_id=501
