The present paper is based on the recognition that despite the substantial role that has been ascribed to interculturality in numerous disciplines of the humanities and social sciences, no culture-centred linguistic paradigm has been delineated so far. Hence, the aim of this contribution is to develop or at least sketch the most important aspects of the horizon, outline and guidelines of an explicitly inter-, respectively transcultural linguistic thinking, to formulate questions concerning its subject matter, as well as to specify potential ways and aspects of academic research, thus planning a possible profile and dimensions of an inter- and transcultural 'paradigm' of linguistics.

The authoress describes intercultural situations in counseling she witnessed or participated in as a counselor while working for EAASSG - East Area Asylum Seekers Support Group - 'Common Ground' located in the eastern part of Newcastle upon Tyne. The aim of the paper is to present intercultural contexts in counseling and the way in which British counselor take a practical advantage of the findings of research on culture codes. The authoress presents the classification of culture codes suggested by Margaret Malewska elaborated on the basis of the concept of culture codes defined by G. Hofstede and E. Hall. Globalization, socio-economic changes and migration result in new challenges for social aid institutions in Poland. The awareness and knowledge of culture codes plays a significant role in the work of counselors. Particular codes present the diversity of culture and world concepts recognized by clients. They offer counselors a better insight into the understanding of the personal situation of particular clients. She presents several situations in which cultural contexts can be alien to Polish counselors due to limited experience in terms of work with people from different cultural areas. In the conclusion the authoress expresses her hope that Polish social workers will undertake all efforts to be well prepared while working with others and their culture.

Te main purpose of this paper is to show the nature and principles of lifelong intercultural education as an optimal educational solution for a multicultural environment. Te author of this article presents and argues the role of lifelong intercultural education in developing intercultural competence among the members of contemporary multicultural and culturally diferentiating societies, including Polish society. Te author describes the main task of lifelong intercul-tural education, which is conducting educational activities that will facilitate the transition from reaction to the otherness (as in multiculturalism) to interaction with the “other” (as in interculturalism).

Issues of language and culture in the EU exhibit a rather complex pattern and their proper management cannot be conceived of without taking the results of interlinguistic and intercultural research into consideration. EU citizens have to be made ready to confront cultural and civilizational diversity and also to understand that diversity rather than taking it to threaten their national identity. Are educated Hungarians ready to come to grips with linguistic, cultural and civilizational diversity? Are they able to adequately treat and accept such diversity? What are they prepared to do in order to maintain and cultivate their own language, culture, and identity, as well as to hand them down to the next generation? These are the challenges that a nation and a sovereign state necessarily have to face. Hungary, torn out of its former isolation, has suddenly found itself exposed to globalization processes. Linguistics, applied linguistics, language planning and language policy have to deal more and more intensively with the above issues.

Esej ten nawiązuje do klasycznych i dzisiejszych socjologicznych i antropologicznych badań nad wielokulturowością i współczesnych koncepcji rozwijanych w tych dziedzinach. Zagadnienie wielokulturowości pojawia się też w filozofii społecznej, co najmniej od czasów Hegla, ale w szczególności w ciągu ostatnich trzech dekad. Według autora, te zjawiska, które są istotne dla wielokulturowości, niekoniecznie muszą być konsekwencją migracji, wewnątrzkrajowych czy międzynarodowych, na ogół są jednak analizowane właśnie w ramach studiów migracyjnych. Wielokulturowość może być analizowana na co najmniej trzech poziomach: faktograficznym, wartościującym i normatywnym (politycznym). Nie wydaje się, aby możliwe było w demokracjach liberalnych odejście od wielokulturowości faktograficznej. Trwanie demokracji liberalnej nie jest jednak przesądzone.

This essay refers to classical and current sociological and anthropological research on multiculturalism as well as to contemporary concepts developed within these fields. The idea of multiculturalism is also identified in social philosophy – starting from the times of Hegel to the most extensive developments occurring in last three decades. The author believes that the phenomena associated with multiculturalism are not necessarily a consequence of migration, international or otherwise. However, they are usually theorized in this context. Multiculturalism can be analyzed on at least three levels: social facts, social values, and social norms and policies. It seems that the retreat from multiculturalism on the factual level would be very difficult in liberal democracies. However, the future of liberal democracies is debatable.
