The aim of the thesis is an attempt to applicate Jerzy Kmita’s theory of culture into the issues included in the domain of intimacy. The first part of the paper is focused on intimacy as a part of culture. To be precise, if the concept of culture is understood after Kmita, it follows that, intimacy is considered as a set of norms and directives respected by the community and regulating intimate praxis in rational-subjective terms. The second part of the thesis is concentrated on the conception of “pure relationship” created by Anthony Giddens, which constitutes one of the most interesting approaches of describing contemporary tranformations of intimacy. Although, the author agrees with most of Giddens’ ideas, he perceives the conception of “pure relationship” as one-sided. Theory of culture created by Kmita, especially the idea of functional and aubjective-rational explanation, is used as a tool to indicate methodological mistakes, which are the reasons for sidedness of Giddens’ perspective.

The paper addresses the issue of dwelling as a powerful way of cultivating atmospheric feelings without the risk of suffering their disturbing aggressiveness, and deals with inclusiveness or immersivity that true dwelling arouses. To avoid the widespread trend to consider every space a dwelling place, it proposes that only a really “lived” place, in so far it radiates a specific and particularly intense-authoritative atmosphere (in kinetic, synesthetic, felt-bodily sense) affecting the perceivers and finding in their body its precise sounding board, makes dwelling in the proper sense possible. Just as there are different types of atmosphere (prototypical, derivative, spurious), there are therefore different types of dwelling and inclusiveness. However, contrary to the today’s projectivist-constructionist explanation and globalized orientation, for a “pathic aesthetics” only a life wordly qualitative-emotional experience based on an atmosphere of intimacy-familiarity really turns a house into a home.

During the rapid social change period from totalitarian to globalized-capitalist society, intimacy and sexuality are undergoing a process of de-tabooing, particularization, and emancipation from social institutions to which they were bound. Sexuality and intimacy enter the social and political arena with new ambitions and requirements, thus articulating requests for intimate and sexual citizenship of various minorities. The overall political environment is, however, characterized by ignorance of these topics by political elites. Moreover sexuality becomes a political commodity. The risks of underestimating importance of sexuality are highlighted by the direct link of sexuality to reproduction. The study focuses on global trends in the (r)evolution of sexuality and its contradictions, transformation of norms related to sexuality, emergence of the new concepts concerning sexuality and citizenship. After a critical analysis of the current reflection of sexual health in Slovakia it offers suggestions of necessary conditions for a positive transformation of the sexual health in Slovakia.

The aim of this paper is to confront two highly differentiated accounts of transformations of contemporary intimacy. The first account, represented mainly by Anthony Giddens and Brian McNair, concentrates on the processes of democratization and emancipation; simply speaking, this approach suggests that modern intimacy contains higher amount of freedom than the pre-modern one. The second account underlines significance of processes of commercialization and rationalization of intimacy; according to this approach intimacy becomes more and more dependent to the capitalistic market. This point of view is represented by social scientists such as Ulrich Beck, Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim, Eva Illouz and Arlie Russell Hochschild. The aim of the article is to analyze the abovementioned accounts not as opposite, but as complementary perspectives, which enable one to perceive the highly ambivalent character of modernization of intimacy and modernization in general.
