Affective Conception of Information and Affect Representation in Information Systems

PURPOSE/THESIS: The aim of this paper is to introduce an affective conception of information by expanding the contemporary mainstream semantic definition of information with an additional subjective constituent. APPROACH/METHODS: Pursuing critical literature review methodology the author addresses the following central questions of the paper: (i) is affect an information kind and if so what kind of information is it, (ii) would affect representation in information systems be of any theoretical or practical value and how such representation could be implemented. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: This paper suggest that we are in the advent of a paradigm shift in information theory and knowledge representation which leads to the emergence of affective information theory and experiential knowledge representation. ORIGINALITY/VALUE: In this paper we propose that affect should be regarded and represented as meta-information which carries complementary information about agent’s subjective experiences that amalgamate under unified state of mind corresponding to the cognitive appreciation of the intentional semantic contents of the information. Furthermore an affect representation model based on state of the art in affective neuroscience has been proposed.

CEL/TEZA: Celem publikacji jest wprowadzenie i omówienie pojęcia informacji w ujęciu afektywnym poprzez rozszerzenie współcześnie najpopularniejszego ujęcia semantycznego o dodatkowy komponent subiektywny. KONCEPCJA/METODY BADAŃ: Przeprowadzając analizę i krytykę, autor rozważa następujące główne pytania wynikające z tezy artykułu: (i) czy afekt jest rodzajem informacji i jeżeli tak, to o jakiej charakterystyce, (ii) czy reprezentacja afektu w systemach informacyjnych może mieć teoretyczną lub praktyczną wartość oraz w jaki sposób taka reprezentacja może być implementowana. WYNIKI I WNIOSKI: Z powyższych rozważań wyłania się konkluzja, iż znajdujemy się na początku zmiany paradygmatu w teorii informacji i reprezentacji wiedzy, który zakłada ujęcie w teorii informacji i komunikacji aspektów afektywnych prowadząc do powstania afektywnej teorii informacji. ORYGINALNOŚĆ/WARTOŚC POZNAWCZA: W artykule zaproponowano, aby afekt był postrzegany i reprezentowany jako uzupełniająca metainformacja ujmująca subiektywne doznania agenta łączące się trwale w spójnej świadomości z kognitywnymi, intensjonalnymi stanami umysłu stanowiącymi podstawę informacji w ujęciu semantycznym. Ponadto zaproponowany został model reprezentacji emocji bazujący na teoriach emocji powstałych na gruncie współczesnej neuronauki afektywnej.
