Objective - The case of Gdańsk University Library is used to present the influence of library automation on the library processes and services in an academic library. Attention is focused on achievements in cataloging and increasing quality of library services. Research method – The following factors are analyzed: milestones in the implementation of the integrated library system and statistical data from the annual reports of the Library and its Department of Descriptive Cataloging. Information collected through this analysis is used to show the impact of library automation on selected library processes and services. Results and conclusions – Data analyzed by the author prove that the library automation introduced at Gdańsk University Library has had a long-term impact on the efficiency of cataloging. Moreover, numerous simplifications resulting from the automation of library processes have increased the quality of services offered by the Library.

Teza/cel - Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie na przykładzie Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego wpływu komputeryzacji procesów bibliotecznych na pracę tego typu placówki. Uwagę skupiono na efektach w zakresie opracowywania zbiorów oraz wzroście poziomu świadczonych usług bibliotecznych. Metody badań - Dokonano analizy najważniejszych wydarzeń w rozwoju systemu komputerowego Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego oraz danych statystycznych zamieszczonych w sprawozdaniach rocznych Biblioteki Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego i sprawozdaniach Oddziału Opracowania Alfabetycznego Druków Zwartych (po zmianach organizacyjnych Oddziału Opracowania Druków Zwartych). Na tej podstawie przedstawiono wpływ komputeryzacji na wybrane aspekty funkcjonowania biblioteki. Wyniki i wnioski - Przeanalizowane dane wykazują, że komputeryzacja procesów bibliotecznych w Bibliotece Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego w dłuższym okresie wpłynęła na znaczne zwiększenie wydajności katalogowania zbiorów. Poprzez ułatwienia wynikające z automatyzacji licznych procesów wzrósł także poziom usług świadczonych przez placówkę.
