Some features within the physical universe appear to be so well-ordered that they have been regarded as evidence of the existence of a supernatural being who has designed them. This history of the so-called design argument is millennia-long, and various formulations of the argument have been presented. In this paper, I explore one contemporary version of the design argument proposed by the Intelligent Design movement, and analyze its advantages and disadvantages in comparison to one of the most famous classical versions of the argument.
This article is an attempt to present modern scientific theories talking about the creation of plural forms of life on Earth. Moreover, this paper presents theological evaluation of these theories. This piece of working presents following theories of evolution: Darwinism and neo-Darwinism; concept of stasis; Evolutionary Development; and Intelligent Design. The additional goal of this article is to exhibit that at the current stage of research anthropogenesis any conception of the origin of man is proved without doubts. This paper shows also arguments why many modern theories of evolution cannot be approved from the theological point of view.

Instead of arguing against the content of ID, the paper points at its methodological deficiencies. In the first place, it is argued, against its followers, that ID is not falsifiable. Contrary to Evolution, ID cannot even play a role of a metaphysical research program in the Popperian sense of the word. More importantly, ID is devoid of any explanatory power. The only kind of explanation for ID to offer is an intentional explanation. This, however, ID is not able to do, for it cannot identify any intentions on the part of the putative Designer. The argument is illustrated by examples from Stanislav Lem’s prose, that present a handful of alternative hypotheses about the Designer’s ends without any hint concerning the choice between them. In addition, the paper puts into doubt the probabilistic argument in favor of ID as well as the argument from irreducible complexity, pointing at the relative simplicity of artefact in comparison to natural objects.

In the reply it is argued, first, that the argument from low probability does not work in the absence of additional assumptions. Second, arguments from laboratory, vestigial structures, and imitating nature in technology are reversed against ID. Third, the question of telling artefacts from natural objects is discussed in the context of the search for explanation. Finally, the neglect of the requirements for an explanation to be non-vacuous on the part of ID theorists is said to drive ID towards fideism rather than science.
Order and change in nature have been for a long time understood in philosophy and theology as founded in divine reason. In the neo-Darwinist theory of evolution, their explanation is reduced to material change without reason. Molecular biologists like M. Behe and W. Demski argue that any reductionist explanation of living beings must be wrong. The evolution of irreducible complex structures is impossible on the basis of random variation and natural selection alone, and must be the result of intelligent design. The article argues that ID-theory, unlike Biblical Creationism, is a challenge for neo-Darwinism and for modern theology as well—for, unlike the Roman magisterium, many Catholic theologians try to harmonize reductive explanation with the notion of creation.
According to intelligent design theory, certain biological and cosmic phenomena were designed by an intelligent being, which could just as well be natural and supernatural, and this design can be detected scientifically. Critics claim that this theory is unscientific because it does not invoke the laws of nature in its explanations, but rather the purported actions of a designer, which violate these laws. However, this objection seems unsound. Intelligent design theory could be recognized as an instance of the so-called historical science, in which explanation by the laws of nature plays, at most, a subsidiary role and its main focus is on seeking out individual causes of individual effects. The requirement to invoke the laws of nature would also be a threat to evolutionary biology, which is another instance of historical science. Moreover, it could be shown that – contrary to the crtitis’ claims – the actions of a possible designer (even a supernatural one) in the world should not immediately be seen as inherent to a violation of the laws of nature, and even if it were the case, the conclusion of design could be well justified.
