The paper surveys intertextual aspects of Bolesław Leśmian’s ballad Dziewczyna across translations into English and Russian (translation series), as well as Czech and German (single renditions). Thematic intertextuality connected with the fairy-tale convention and specific references to philosophical concepts (Descartes, Kant) are discussed. Dialogic relations absent from the original but activated in translations are also indicated (e.g. a Biblical context). The following aspects influencing the rendition of dialogic signals are considered important: metrical restrictions, the unwieldiness of the canonic formulation of intertexts for poetic appropriation, the skill and worldviews of the translators. Thanks to the numerous translations of the ballad, we can ascertain whether awareness and prioritizing of referential qualities change with time, target culture and the translators’ backgrounds.

The main issues discussed in this article are the intertextual relationships between two novels: one the most famous modernistic texts — Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf and The Hours by Michael Cunningham. The American writer’s novel alludes already in the title to Woolf’s work. The Hours was the working title for Mrs Dalloway. The detailed analysis of the various references to it acknowledges the hypotext in the Cunningham novel and proves that intertextuality in this case has its mainly existential dimension: for heroines of The Hours Mrs Dalloway provides an opportunity for not only re-writing or re-reading but for re-existing as well.

This article provides an exploration of intertextuality in Tadeusz Rożewicz’s motif of Prague and in the creation of his characters – the inhabitants of the city. It seems that in his works – Zamknięcie (Closure), Szachownica (Chessboard), Wigilia w obcym mieście (Christmas Eve in a Foreign City) and Strahovski Kamieniołom (Strahovski Quarry) – the Polish poet refers to the characters and the city of Prague that appear in the fictional works of Franz Kafka (The Trial and Description of a Struggle) as well as in his diaries and private correspondence (Diary 1910–1923, letters). The question that I discuss is the following: How do Franz Kafka’s characters and his image of Prague correspond to the Prague and the characters of Różewicz’s works?

In his novel Der Fliegenpalast, Walter Kappacher, an expert on and admirer of Hugo von Hofmannsthal, drew on his profound knowledge of Hofmannsthal’s work, as well as researching extensively on the author and his time. This resulted in a dense fabric of intertextual references to both Hofmannsthal’s work and his reading. Interwoven with this biographical narration is a broad socio-historic panorama of the first decades of the 20th century in Austria. An analysis of the construction of seemingly self-evident Austrian references proves that this novel can only be adequately analyzed and interpreted in the context of Austrian political as well as literary and cultural history.

Der Hofmannsthalkenner und -verehrer Walter Kappacher hat für seinen Roman Der Fliegenpalast (2009) auf seine fundierten Kenntnisse des Hofmannsthalschen OEuvres zurückgegriffen und umfangreiche Recherchen zum Autor und zu seiner Zeit angestellt. Daraus entstand ein dichtes Geflecht von intertextuellen Bezügen sowohl zu Werken von Hofmannsthal als auch zu dessen Lektüre, in das Kappacher ein breites kultur- und sozialgeschichtliches Panorama der ersten Jahrzehnte des vergangenen Jahrhunderts in Österreich verwob. Die Analyse der Konstruktion dieser scheinbar so selbstverständlich österreichischen Referenzen belegt, dass der Roman nur im Kontext der österreichischen Historie, sowie der österreichischen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte adäquat analysiert und interpretiert werden kann.

This article is devoted to sociological reflection on the dialogue of scientific texts. It takes place by referring to some phenomena and theories widely discussed on the ground of sociology, which show the social character of intertextual references. The article provides arguments for the hypo- thesis that intertextual dialogue is a common activity that usually turns into a sequence of social activities. A sociological view of the issue of dialogue between authors of scientific texts leads to the conclusion that in the interaction that is being established there is a process of exchange connected with creating the image of the author in the academic environment. An equally important issue addressed in this publication is the normative regulation of interaction in intertextual dialogue.

The present study concentrates on the phenomenon of intertextuality in one of Bohumil Hrabal’s key early works, namely, the “existential” short story entitled Kain. The author examines especially the intertextual resonances between Hrabal’s work, Camus’s The Stranger, Dante’s Vita nuova and Goethe’s Sufferings of Young Werther.

The article derives from the intertextual approach to the notion of literary identity, introduced to the modern literary theory in the 1960’s by Julia Kristeva (born 1941). The main idea behind this approach is that no literary text should be perceived as an isolated unity, but always in relation to other texts, which it refers to. The author applies the intertextual perspective to examine the signs of external literary influences in Lise Andersens minimalist prose collection ”En særlig sommer og andre billeder”, published in 2008. The analysis aims to highlight influences from the American short story genre, which appears as an important source of inspiration not only for Andersen herself, but in fact for most of the Danish writers of minimalist fiction. The analysis provides examples of, how inspiration from the American short story manifests itself in form, narration and structure of the selected stories in the collection. Last but not least, the author draws attention to the general importance of American influences in Danish contemporary short fiction and their role for the critical perception of this literary genre both in Denmark and abroad.

Issues concerning history of literary research in Poland constitute content of the paper. The author aimed at examining possible relations between contemporary researches on intertextuality and so called Polish school of ”influenceology” – a popular trend in Polish literary study in two first decades of the 20th century. Ruminations on scholarly achievements of Stanisław Windakiewicz who is the main representative of this trend are included in the paper, as well as detailed critical reception of his works at that time. An outline of differences of opinions between supporters of researches on literary influences and interrelations and opponents of such way of analyzing of literature were presented. The author aimed at emphasizing both advantages, as well as disadvantages of comparative investigations of that time. Finally, similarities and differences between ”influenceology” and intertextuality were pointed. Definitions of intertextuality proposed by i.e. Polish literary theoreticians ( H. Markiewicz, M. Głowiński) were used in the paper.

W artykule zajęto się pytaniem o chrześcijańskie odczytywanie Biblii Hebrajskiej/Starego Testamentu, która jest jednocześnie pierwszą częścią kanonu chrześcijan i Pismem świętym Żydów (religii żydowskiej), po Auschwitz, za który teologia chrześcijańska ponosi współodpowiedzialniość. Punktem wyjścia jest prezentacja trzech współczesnych propozycji hermeneutycznych: Christopha Dohmena, Franka Crüsemanna i Waldemara Chrostowskiego. Chrystologiczna interpretacja Biblii Hebrajskiej jest możliwa jedynie świetle wiary wielkanocnej uczniów Jezusa, bez wiary wielkanocnej taka interpretacja byłaby nie do pomyślenia, bez społeczności chrześcijańskiej by nie istniała. Przy czym dla chrystologicznej interpretacji nie ma zasadniczego znaczenia, czy jej podstawą jest Biblia Hebrajska czy Septuaginta.

The author asks about Christian ways of reading of the Hebrew Bible as a first part of the Christian biblical canon in times after Holocaust. He presents three modern hermeneutical proposals of this reading: Christoph Dohmen’s, Frank Crüsemann’s and Waldemar Chrostowski’s (as representative for Polish roman catholic theology). A Christological lecture of the Hebrew Bible is possible only in the light of the Eastern experience of Jesus’ followers. The lecture is strongly connected with the first century Jewish interpretations but unimaginable without the faith in Jesus’ resurrection. From intertextuality point of view the Christological interpretation of the Hebrew Bible is necessary and inalienable but only within the Christian community of faith. A question whether the Christian Old Testament is the Hebrew Bible or the Septuagint is of minor importance. For understanding of Christian traditions we need the Hebrew Bible and the Septuagint, and intertestamental literature.
