Józef Mackiewicz, as a writer for “Słowo”, a newspaper published in Vilnius, was particularly interested in communist ideology. He should be considered as the father of the Polish school of sovietology. The article analyses Mackiewicz’s way of thinking in the matters of communism and the Soviet system.
The article reconstructs the most important roles played by Józef Mackiewicz (1902–1985) – one of the most eminent of Polish writers and publicists – in the Katyń Massacre case. The encounter of the author of Bunt rojstów [The Revolt of the Mires] with the fate of the Polish officers executed by the Soviet NKVD in Katyń began in the spring of 1943 with his role as a witness to the exhumation of the corpses of the murdered. That dimension of testimony, however, documented by the writer’s harrowing reports, is only the beginning of the subsequent roles played by him in the Katyń case. He was also a documentalist and researcher of this crime, as well as a writer trying to present the event in a vivid and emotional way (his first original monograph on Katyń). Until the end of his life, he also remained a guardian of the truth about it, actively participating in discussions on new evidence of the crime and commenting on all actions (especially Soviet ones) that attempted to falsify historical facts. The author of the article systematically presents all these roles and points out that they are at the core of Mackiewicz’s entire work – we also find them in the writer’s novels, reportage and articles.

Obok wszechstronnie rozpoznanego i typowego dla niektórych formacji ustrojowych zjawiska cenzury urzędowej (oficjalnej) należy wyróżnić funkcjonujący powszechnie fenomen cenzury społecznej (nieoficjalnej).

Artistic work is subject to a series of external pressures that constitute and structure the field of artistic licentia poetica. Apart from the phenomenon of official censorship, which is widely recognized and typical for some political groups, the phenomenon of social (unofficial) censorship should be distinguished. Censorship in the official sense is defined as, preventive or offensive, control of the content of acts of communication made by specialized state institutions within the framework of the government’s information policy. Social censorship also constitutes a fragment of the social control apparatus and focuses on the regulation of the communication process, but its disponent is not the government but the specific social circles. For this reason, its actions, although they may be the fulfillment of the official censorship goals, are not delegated by it on the basis of institutional coercion. The author deals with the functioning of social censorship on examples drawn from literary life, especially the turmoil around the person and the work of Józef Mackiewicz.
