The history of culture has not been an academic discipline cultivated at German universities for a long time. This history, situated in various academic, institutional and political contexts, provides a good example of historiography approaching culture as an object of reflection. In the present article the author attempts to demonstrate the basic directions of the development of this field of historical research, paying particular attention to the leading figures of Kulturgeschichte, including Jakob Burckardt and Karl Lamprecht, and to its presence in German historiography after 1945.
