Jacob Taubes (1923–1987) was a Jewish philosopher, historian of ideas, talented writer and long-time lecturer at universities in New York, Harvard, and Princeton. His interests were focused on eschatology, interpreted in the key of political theology. He was fascinated by the figure of Saint Paul, whom he regarded more as a Jew than a Christian. He never specified his religious affiliation, but he professed a belief in transcendence, the purposefulness of the world, and eternal life. Privately, he was a figure who evoked extreme emotions; he was enigmatic, full of contradictions and even controversial. Despite his brilliant career and philosophical genius, Taubes did not leave behind many works. In Poland, he remains a niche and unrecognized author. This article serves as an introduction to the biography and work of Jacob Taubes, presenting his life story and scholarly achievements, as well as identifying the distinctive characteristics of this mysterious Jewish philosopher’s work.

W Polsce pozostaje autorem niszowym i nierozpoznawalnym. Artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do biografii i twórczości Jacoba Taubesa, przedstawia jego życiorys i dorobek naukowy, a także określa charakterystyczne cechy twórczości tego tajemniczego żydowskiego filozofa.

The article is an attempt to read Franz Kafka’s texts in the light of findings included in the article of the 20th-century philosopher and sociologist of religion, Jacob Taubes. For Taubes, Kafka’s key figure is exclusion, a phenomenon of alienness of characters created by the author of The Castle. “Kafka describes the world from the perspective of an outsider, who is desperately seeking the acceptance of the world”, he wrote. In this article, the philosopher’s words will be verified. The basic question is whether Taubes as the messianic bard of the revolution (whose presence in the national philosophical reflection became belatedly increasingly noticeable) does not use too radical simplification in his laconic interpretation of Kafka’s writing.
