This article aims to present poetry as a record of the existential interpretation of Scripture. As an illustration of this issue, the article examines the book of Experiencing the Earth by Fr. Janusz S. Pasierb (1929–1993). The text is part of the current research literature as a locus theologicus.

Janusz S. Pasierb kept his diary from 1943–1993. In Pasierb’s diary, the figure of John Paul II appears several times. The author writes about events from the Pope’s life (the conclave, pilgrimages, private meetings). The reporting is emotional, the words are lively, and there is mention of the author’s own emotions. The Pope has both a physical and a moral strength. Pasierb comments on the Pope’s sermons, his thoughts on culture, and also reads the poetry and dramas of John Paul II.

W dzienniku księdza Janusza S. Pasierba, prowadzonym od 1943 roku aż do śmierci (1993), postać Jana Pawła II pojawia się kilkunastokrotnie. Pasierb przywołuje wydarzenia związane z biografią Papieża i je interpretuje. Notatki w dzienniku mają charakter emocjonalny i osobisty. Język opowieści o wydarzeniach rozgrywających się w pierwszych piętnastu latach pontyfikatu Jana Pawła II jest żywy, obrazowy. Papież odznacza się siłą fizyczną i moralną. Pasierb prowadzi dialog z homiliami i dokumentami papieskimi. Pasierb jest też czytelnikiem poezji i dramatów Karola Wojtyły i ich komentatorem.

Artykuł jest próbą analizy i interpretacji wiersza Janusza S. Pasierba "Dyptyk z centurionem". Trafny dobór lektur pozwolił umieścić analizowany wiersz nie tylko w kręgu Ewangelii, ale również w kontekście problematyki psychologicznej (prace Kazimierza Dąbrowskiego) i filozoficznej (Jolande Jacobi). Znajomość pism św. Jana od Krzyża umożliwiła ponadto wykorzystanie w analizie i interpretacji pojęcia „nocy ciemnej”.

The article is an attempt to analyse and interpret the poem by Januasz S. Pasierb entitled “Diptych with a Centurion”. Well-chosen reading selection made it possible to include the poem not only in the framework of the gospel but in the context of psychological (works by Kazimierz Dąbrowski) and philosophical (Jolande Jacobi) issues as well. Knowledge of the works by Saint John of the Cross also allowed the use of the term of “The Dark Night” in the analysis and interpretation.
