The book is comprised of selected titles from Jerzy S. Majewski’s newspaper columns, which are devoted to historical Warsaw and which were published in the capital’s circular in „Gazeta Wyborcza”, and later expanded and developed with the help of many obliging people. Descriptions are accompanied by photographs which come from archives and private collections, which elevates the illuminative value of the publication. Journals, diaries and recollections are special resources of information, because they are rooted in personal experience. Warsaw and the story of its capital status (which was interrupted several times) was the subject of the descriptions. During the past decade it has been further developed by authors who research post-war reconstruction documentation, as well as by scrupulous readers of advertisements and press memos from the twenty-year, inter-war period. Those are the precursors of the authors of the columns which were printed in the daily papers and magazines after 1945. Their collections of reminiscences are devoid of the personal reflections of the city’s residents before the rebuilding, and participants of the events described. Contemporary authors create yet another nostalgic vision of the city, which is a half-century younger in its experiences and cultural changes.
