Inkwizycja, która w dużym stopniu determinuje ocenę Joanny d’Arc, rozwijała się przez wieki. Jej procedura prawna miała na celu uniknięcie niesprawiedliwych wyroków. Proces Joanny stanowi przykład licznych uchybień. Anglicy, dla których stanowiła symbol francuskiego oporu, postarali się nie tylko o wyeliminowanie jej z rzeczywistości politycznej, ale i o zniszczenie dobrego imienia (nieuzasadnione rozszerzenie składu sędziowskiego, opłacenie go, wyimaginowane posądzenia). Proces rehabilitacyjny św. Joanny d’Arc jest bezprecedensowym postępowaniem dokumentującym nadużycia. W związku z interwencją samego papieża, do którego apelację uprzednio uniemożliwiono, za sprawą działań króla Karola VII oraz dzięki zeznaniom wielu osób powiązanych z procesem skazującym, oczyszczono dobre imię „Dziewicy Orleańskiej”.
