Many early modern writers were fascinated by the notion of the Adamic language in which Adam named the animals, a language that many believed could express the essence of things perfectly. Umberto Eco has displayed a recurrent interest in Adamic language in both his scholarship and his fiction, and this article pays tribute to Eco through placing his work in conversation with a number of scholarly fields in which the idea of Adamic language occurs, including studies of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, the Qur’an and Islamic tradition, the history of science, and early Mormonism. The article concludes by challenging some of the theoretical assumptions made about Adamic language, both by Eco and in early modern discussions, through a rereading of Adam’s speech in Genesis 2.

Wielu wczesnych nowoczesnych pisarzy było zafascynowanych pojęciem języka Adamowego, w którym to biblijny Adam nazwał zwierząta - języka, którym można wyrazić istotę rzeczy doskonałych. Umberto Eco wykazuje niegasnące zainteresowanie językiem Adamowym zarówno w swojej pracy naukowej, jak i pisarskiej. Artykuł ten składa hołd Eco poprzez umieszczenie jego rozważań w kontekście wielu dziedzin naukowych, w których pojawia się idea języka Adamowego, w tym u Johna Miltona w Raju utraconym, Koranie i tradycji islamskiej, historii nauki i wczesnym Mormonizmie. Artykuł kończy podważenie niektórych teoretycznych założeń dotyczących języka Adamowego (autorstwa Eco i dyskusji wczesnej nowoczesności, poprzez nowe od-czytanie słów Adama z Księgi Rodzaju.

The musicological tradition places Liszt’s Sonata in B minor within the sphere of compositions inspired by the Faustian myth. Its musical material, its structure and its narrative exhibit certain similarities to the ‘Faust’ Symphony. Yet there has appeared a different and, one may say, a rival interpretation of Sonata in B minor. What is more, it is well-documented from both a musical and a historical point of view. It has been presented by Hungarian pianist and musicologist Tibor Szasz. He proposes the thesis that the Sonata in B minor has been in fact inspired by Milton’s Paradise Lost, with its three protagonists: Adam, Satan and Christ. He finds their illustrations and even some key elements of the plot in the Sonata’s narrative. But yet Milton’s Paradise Lost and Goethe’s Faust are both stories of the Fall and Salvation, of the cosmic struggle between good and evil. The triads of their protagonists - Adam and Eve, Satan, and Christ; Faust, Mephisto and Gretchen - are homological. Thus both interpretations of the Sonata, the Goethean and the Miltonian, or, in other words, the Faustian and the Luciferian, are parallel and complementary rather than rival. It is also highly probable that both have had their impact on the genesis of the Sonata in B minor.

The present article is an attempt to look at selected Romantic poems which concentrate on the image of the nightingale. Starting from Charlotte Smith’s sonnets and continuing with poems by other writers of the period, I will try to trace the link between nature and poetic convention in English Romanticism. While some of the nightingales which sing in Romantic poetry seem deeply symbolic, other forsake poetic tradition and stubbornly persist in their birdy nature, resisting descriptions in terms of melancholia or woe. Nevertheless, the fate of Philomela, whose sad story of violation identifies the nightingale with loss, suffering and poetic creation, still remains an important context for Romantic nightingale poems.
