In the common opinion of the classicists Polybios’ Historiae are considered to be an extremely reliable source for the reconstruction of the Republican Roman army organization. The problem is he did not have the declared military experience, but also did not always describe what he actually saw. In the sixth book of Historiae there are some ideal-type suggestions which are the legacy of a specific literary genre called tactica. Polybios was one of the authors of this kind of military treaties. What is more, in the other fragments of his work he committed an archaization, presenting the image of the Roman armed forces probably from the fourth century BC. All this makes that uncritical taking of his arguments may lead to distortions in the image of the studied subject.

Wrocław University Library treasures an interesting polonicum—a copy of “Politicorum sive Doctrinae libri sex” by Justus Lipsius in the translation of Paweł Szczerbic “Polityka pańskie, to jest Nauka, jako pan i każdy przełożony rządnie żyć i sprawować się ma” (“The Politics”). (Cracow 1595. BUWr 442635). Its pages contain two handwritten notes by an old reader that firmly criticise the Netherlandic philosopher who called for “burning and hacking” the heretics. The paper discussed Lipsius’ work, its contexts (the changing confessing stance of the founder of neo-stoicism), as well as the history of the print (the Cracow edition, the property of the Cistercian monastery in the Upper Silesian Rudy, and later Wrocław University Library). The paper also tries to settle who the old reader was and what his intentions were.
The purpose of this article is to show the impact of Niccolò Machiavelli’s idea on Łukasz Opaliński’s “A Parish Priest’s Conversation With a Landowner”. The author of article noticed that for both of these political writers, virtue, good laws and customs were very important. First of all, however, the article presented examples of references by the Polish poet and writer of the baroque to such works as “The Prince” and “Discourses on the First Decade of Titus Livius”. The author also pointed out what influence this reception of Niccolò Machiavelli’s writings.
Professor Andrzej Borowski from the Jagiellonian University, whose 70th anniversary we celebrate this year, is a very well known scholar and literature historian, specialised in Old Polish Literature (Middle Ages, Renaissance and Baroque) - and with a background from Classical studies. A lesser known fact is that he also is a scholar active in the field of the Netherlandish (Dutch and Flemish) literature and culture: as author of numerous books and articles about (South) Netherlandish figures from the 16th and 17th century, as supervisor of numerous dissertations or habilitations in the field of the Netherlandish literature and as an inspiring personality in the field of the Netherlandish studies at Polish universities. He can indeed be seen as the Spiritus Litterarum Neerlandicorum in Poland.
