„Gorgiasz” Platona jest jednym z wcześniejszych dzieł filozoficznych jednego z najbardziej wpływowych filozofów starożytności. Podejmowane są w nim tematy różnic między sztuką a umiejętnością retoryki, prawdy, sprawiedliwości czy prawa, przede wszystkim jednak natury ludzkiej. To właśnie wokół tego ostatniego problemu koncentrują się rozważania dwóch rozmówców zabierających głos jako ostatni w dialogu. Podczas sławnego starcia idei stają przeciwko sobie Kallikles, zwolennik bezwzględnej supremacji prawa natury, zgodnie z którego nakazami silni dominować muszą nad słabymi, oraz Sokrates, mistrz Platona, poprzez którego ten ostatni kreśli wizje ponadludzkiej sprawiedliwości, prawodawstwa zgodnego z ideałem zdrowej duszy i piękna. Te przekonywające stanowiska wykładane są ze swadą godną najlepszych dzieł ateńskiego myśliciela. W istocie rozważania na temat roli prawa w życiu jednostki ukazane w „Gorgiaszu” na przykładzie rozmowy Sokratesa i Kalliklesa należą do najbardziej znaczących ustępów z twórczości Platona poświęconej tematyce prawnej. Osadzenie tego starcia w szerszym kontekście historyczno-filozoficznym, a także przedstawienie struktury narracyjnej dialogu, umożliwia ponadto wniknięcie w istotę „Gorgiasza”, dialogu poświęconego najbardziej podstawowym zagadnieniom antropologicznym, poprzez który ponadto Platon rozwiązuje problem własnego stanowiska wobec śmierci swojego mistrza, Sokratesa.

Plato’s „Gorgias” is considered to be an early work of one of the most influential philosophers of antiquity. It raises subjects such as differences between the arts and ability of rhetoric, truth, justice and law, most of all however – human nature. Contemplations of the last two dialogi personae orbit around exactly this problem. Famous clash of ideas takes place between Callicles – staunch proponent of callous supremacy of law of pure nature according to which the strong must dominate the weak – and Socrates, Plato’s mentor, through whom the latter drafts a vision of supernatural justice, law-making in accordance with ideals of healthy soul and beauty. Both of these convincing visions are laid out as amply as can be expected from the best works of Athenian philosopher. In fact deliberations upon the importance of law in one’s life as presented in „Gorgias” in conversation between Socrates and Callicles are to be considered as one of the most profound pieces of legal thought ever produced by Plato. Putting this confrontation in broad historical and philosophical context, as well as presenting narrative structure of the dialogue make it possible to pierce the heart of „Gorgias” and uncover all meanings of the dialogue devoted to the most fundamental anthropological subjects, through which Plato also resolves very personal dilemma of his own stance towards death of his master - Socrates.
