The main aim of the study was to determine the level of the threats of social- -spatial order in Kołobrzeg – a city in north-western Poland – based on local people’s opinions. In general, respondents shared their positive view of Kołobrzeg according to various descriptive categories, while the threats were noticed to a relatively small extent. Among the considered social-spatial threats most of them they referred to the broad topic of social environment rather than to any spatial and physical problems. Hence those often comprised of unemployment, presence of drunken people in the streets, lacking leisure opportunities and poverty. At the same time, the threats under investigation were perceived as much acute among respondents living in the city centre who pointed out unemployment, groups of ‘hanging around’ young people, homeless people and beggars, presence of drunken people in the streets and high noise disturbance as the most serious problems.
The aim of the paper is to present the beginnings of the Polish interest in the early-mediaeval past of Kołobrzeg (Kolberg) mainly on the basis of archival sources. For 200 years the town was an important German location, and since 1945 it has been a significant Polish place of memory. However, so far there are no studies dealing with the history of research on the town of Kołobrzeg, although such enquiry subsequently became a canvas of political narratives about the past. The limit of the time-scope covered in the paper is the end of the 1950s, when the first stage of archaeological works on the Kołobrzeg settlement in Budzistowo (Altstadt) were completed. In 1960 a number of enterprises were undertaken in connection with the celebration of the Millennium of the Polish State. The article attempts to answer the question why studies on Kołobrzeg were launched so late, whether it was a top-down or bottom-up initiative and what was the meaning of the research. The source base of the paper consists mainly of archival materials collected in state archives and scientific and cultural institutions.
In recent years, there has been a growing global interest in spa tourism, as well as a significant increase in social awareness of the need to care for health, physical fitness and well-being. Apart from spa tourism, ‘spa & wellness’ tourism is also very popular. Kołobrzeg, in addition to being a town largely geared towards patients, also attracts tourists who take advantage of ‘spa & wellness’ treatments. The purpose of this article is to define the essence and characteristics of spa tourism based on the example of Kołobrzeg. Spa activities are carried out in health care entities operating in the zone of the spa, places where patients are undergoing treatment or rehabilitation. These benefit from the healing natural conditions of the areas in which they operate and their microclimates. The main part of the article presents the history of spa tourism in Kołobrzeg along with an analysis of its spa offer and therapeutic profile. In addition, the empirical part discusses the results of an analysis among patients using the survey method; a large proportion of respondents were over 65, mainly female. During the study, the respondents rated various aspects of their spa stay (on a scale from 1 to 5) at a level above 4.0, which indicates the healthy condition of the spa itself and general satisfaction among patients.
Kołobrzeg’s harbour, located by the mouth of Parsęta River, started its functioning at the turn of 13th and 14th century. It was directly connected with wide-spreading of cogs in hanseatic marine navigation. Cogs, because of their submersion, were not being able to easily reach the founded town. Most probably in 14th century on the east riverbank the wharf was built. At the same time the construction of short (about 50 meters long) breakwaters was started. Breakwaters were necessary to buckler the river mouth. Simultaneously customs house, where village head of Ujście officiated, was located in the harbour. The village head was obligated to look after the harbour. Over the years, despite great damages caused by very strong cyclic storms (1497, 1645, 1649, 1691, 1693, 1730, and 1731) and the devastations caused by armed conflicts, especially the Thirty Years’ War and the Seven Years’ War, the Kołobrzeg’s harbour gradually expanded. Breakwaters with the strong wooden caisson construction were led over 100 m into the sea. The wharf on the east bank of the Parsęta River was extended to about 250 m. The wharf was originally built with wooden caissons (15th – 17th century) and then it was changed to palisade construction (18th c.). The harbour infrastructure of the time also included: a customs house, a harbour crane (confirmed in 16th c.), storage yards, a salt warehouse and, since 18th century, stowage (Packhof). From 1666, on the east riverside in the fortifications erected during Thirty Years’ War, a lighthouse started its function. The main problem of the harbour was maintaining the harbour depth (about 2,5 m) and the depth of the harbour entrance (it was varied and depending on the current natural conditions). The straightforward methods of dredging the harbour waters of the time did not cause lasting and satisfactory results. In this situation since 16th century the larger vessels were forced to carry indirect transhipments on the roadstead. The harbour was at first managed by the harbour head. However in the 14th century “harbour masters” who charged fees from arriving vessels to the mouth of Parsęta River, were introduced. Since the second half of 15th century there have been harbour administrators (started from one, then two, and finally four), who, on behalf of the council, rotary managed the harbour. Over time (in the second half of 16th century) the function of “harbour masters” disappeared, and harbour administrators managed the entire harbour, including charging harbour fees (until the end of 17th century) and supervising repairs and function of the harbour. Harbour administrator on duty had authority over the village head of Ujście, harbour carpenter with assistants, pilots who led in vessels into the harbour and harbour workers. In the 18th century all the fees from imported and exported goods and arriving vessels were charged by stowage officials (Packhof). There was also harbour office there.

Falochrony o silnej konstrukcji kaszycowej wyprowadzono blisko 100 m w głąb morza. Nabrzeże przy wschodnim brzegu Parsęty wydłużono do około 250 m, przy czym początkowo było to nabrzeże kaszycowe (XV–XVII wiek), a następnie palisadowe (XVIII wiek). Z ówczesnej infrastruktury portowej należy jeszcze wymienić: karczmę celną, żuraw portowy (potwierdzony w XVI wieku), place składowe, magazyn solny, a w XVIII wieku pakownię (Packhof). Z czasem (druga połowa XVI wieku) zanikli „panowie portowi”, a prowizorzy portowi zarządzali całym portem, pobierali opłaty portowe (do końca XVII wieku), nadzorowali remonty oraz pracę portu.
The article presents the study of early medieval pottery found during excavations conducted in 2014 on Salt Island (Polish name: Wyspa Solna) in Kołobrzeg.
The article is devoted to the painting stored in the Kołobrzeg collegiate church, representing "A wise woman", and to the reception of the iconographic type it belongs to. The composition is untypical, full of symbols and non-obvious signs, explained in the inscriptions placed on both sides of the representation. Moreover, in the 18th century an information was placed on the panel about its founder, the year it came to the church, and its renovation. The painting belongs to quite popular in the late Middle Ages group of parenetic representations, which were intended to demonstrate models of proper attitudes. These models, due to the invention and dissemination of graphic techniques, could find their way to more and more numerous recipients. Similar holds true for the composition which is found in Kołobrzeg: in the first half of the 16th century, images of wise woman were printed in Cologne, Amsterdam, and in an unidentified workshop in the German Reich. Over the course of time the formula was enriched with an image of a wise man. Although in the oldest realizations the picture was accompanied with a commentary, the later copies contain the picture alone which seems to prove considerable popularity of the composition.

The article focuses on the role of cities in Western Pomeranian in wars waged by the Hanseatic League against Valdemar IV, King of Denmark, between 1362 and 1370, and the influence of the peace treaty concluded in Stralsund on the development of a demand for building churches in Pomeranian cities that had actively participated in the conflict.
The article discusses the course of the Thirty Years’ War in the Duchy of Szczecin from the moment of signing the capitulation in Franzburg by Duke Bogislaw XIV in 1627 until the death of this ruler ten years later. This description is based on information from the second part of the manuscript Chronicle of Pastor Peter Rudolphy from 1696. From its text, the events that were breakthrough in the history of Pomerania were selected, such as the accommodation of imperial soldiers or the entry into war of the Swedish King Gustav II Adolph. Mechanisms used by soldiers of both armies to occupy city centres, e.g. Gryfice, Kołobrzeg, Pyrzyce, Stargard and Szczecin, were also presented. The article does not exhaust the whole subject, but is only a contribution to the knowledge not only of the history of the conflict in Pomerania, but also the chronicle itself.

Gryfic, Kołobrzegu, Pyrzyc, Stargardu i Szczecina.

Poland’s Primate Cardinal. Stefan Wyszynski caring for the western and northern areas was the initiator and protector of the development of religious life in Western Pomerania. Cardinal Wyszynski’s long-term endeavours and efforts in the Holy See were indeed successful, as in 1972, along with other Polish dioceses in the western and northern dioceses the following ones were created: Gorzów, Szczecin-Kamiensk, another one covering Central Pomerania and the Diocese of Koszalin-Kolobrzeg, based in Koszalin, which referred to the tradition of the former bishopric of Kolobrzeg. This was included in the boundaries of the Gniezno metropolis. The primate of Poland visited Koszalin, Kolobrzeg, and Slupsk twice. During his trips, he preached, sparing no efforts to encourage people to keep the faith and fidelity to the Catholic Church and the Christian traditions of the Polish nation.
In the early 1900s, European citizens, especially from the working class, suffered from diseases caused by nutrient deficiencies. In addition to tuberculosis, which was spreading in poor city quarters, so called skrofula (a lymphadenitis of the cervical lymph nodes associated with tuberculosis) and rickets were also spread. Houses for weakened and malnourished residents were built on the Baltic coast for preventive or rehabilitation purposes. That is why these spas were called "Seehospiz" or "Heilstätte" in German. The article presents the most important objects that existed about 100-125 years ago in the territory of the present West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

For 150 years Kołobrzeg was an important place of remembrance in Germany. In 1945 Pomerania together with that town was captured by the Polish state after bloody fights of the Polish army. With the reference to the 1945 battle the Polish created several historical myths, which also refer to a Medieval narrative. The article is an attempt to investigate – on the basis of chronicles – whether already in the Middle Ages the narrative about Kołobrzeg and nearby Białogard played a similar role in the symbolic policy among the Polish elites. The first part of the article describes the records of chroniclers about the expeditions of Bolesław III Wrymouth to Białogard and Kołobrzeg. The second part depicts their significance against the background of the contemporary political situation. It seems that at the beginning of the 12th century Gallus Anonymus (Anonymous) tried to invest those towns with symbolic significance, but with time chroniclers changed the original meaning of the records and entwined their elements in the current political discourse. Those plots came back only when the idea of the union between Poland and Pomerania re-emerged.

Cathedral (greek Kathedra – chair, seat) is the church of the diocesan bishop (lat. Cathedralis ecclesia), Archbishop (Metropolitan Cathedral) or Patriarch (patriarchal church). As a bishop’s church, it is usually the burial place of the diocesan bishops. Cathedral term also refers to the co-cathedral and procathedral. Sometimes the cathedral is the common name of the main church of the city. The past 1050 anniversary of the baptism of Poland found its special place in the space of Poznań, Gniezno, or Ostrów Lednicki, but also extended to the Oder and the Baltic Sea. After foundation of the bishopric in Poznan, her steward extended the jurisdiction over the whole country, up to Wolin. When the metropolis in Gniezno was founded, it was also consisted of a bishopric in Kołobrzeg. It is here, as well as later in Wolin, especially in Kamień Pomorski, one should look for the start of the Pomeranian cathedrals. At present, Szczecin and Koszalin are dominated by the cathedral churches, which were not built for the purpose of being cathedral. There is no sign after the first cathedral in Kolobrzeg, just like after the second cathedral in Wolin – there is only the cross and the obelisk. Until our times only Cathedral in Kamień survived – 28th June 1972 it became co-cathedral. Cathedral in Kamień should become the apple of the eye not only for all the inhabitants of Western Pomerania, because the people of Pomerania love beauty and the music and deserves it. There should be an scientific publication, as well as photo album treats extensively about this cathedral, only one in Western Pomerania built from scratch as the cathedral.
The Registry Office (Archives) in Greifswald preserves, in the archival set Staatskanzelei, four archival units related to printing and the book trade in Kołobrzeg (German: Colberg) in the first half of the seventeenth century. They represent material of institutional character that refer to problems in printing and book trade viewed by the provincial administration of the Branderburg March. The first printing house in Colberg, with the elector Frederic Wilhelm consent, was set up in May 1653 and Henrich Heissen was appointed the first printer of the new establishment. He was followed, until the end of the seventeenth century, by: Jacob Kusen, Berger Campen and Johan Nikolaus Ernst. Printers in Colberg were not only involved in printing books but also in selling them in the town. Beside the already mentioned printers, in the timeframe in question, there were also other professional booksellers such as Jeremias Amphras, Jacob Henning, Johan Danhardt and Jeremias Schrey. In all, in the second half of the seventeenth century, Colberg was an important center of publishing and book trade. Its importance was diminished greatly when the capital of the province was moved to Stargard (German: Stargard in Pommern) in 1668.

W Archiwum Krajowym w Greifswaldzie w zespole archiwalnym Staatskanzelei zachowały się trzy jednostki archiwalne dotyczące drukarstwa i handlu książką w Kołobrzegu w drugiej połowie XVII wieku. Znaczenie to pomniejszyło przeniesienie stolicy prowincji do Stargardu (1668 rok).
The article is an extended version of the lecture delivered at the International Conference ‘The Reformation in West Pomerania’, which took place on 8–9 December in the Conference Centre of the Szczecin University in Kulice. The questions dealt with in the text include the impact of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation on the form and contents of the modern-times epitaphs in Central Pomerania, which was exemplified with selected items: the epitaph of the married couple of the Adebars (1500) from the Cathedral in Kolberg (Kołobrzeg), the epitaph of Faustina Knigge (1587), which at first was also placed in the Kolberg Collegiate Church and now is to be found in St Mary’s Church in Belgard (Białogard); and exemplified with later artefacts of the 17th–18th centuries devoted to the Family of the Podewils in Krangen, Wusterwitz and Zuckau. The review of the artefacts is preceded by a list of Luther’s recommendations concerning sacred art, including the changing iconography, the subject matter of paintings and sculptures and some modest statements about the epitaphs themselves.
