The goal of the article is to show that in Chapter Four of Phenomenology of Spirit the aim is not to show the servant as the one who becomes independent of nature, but to show his escapism and its consequences. The main point of reference is the “master-slave” dialectic, with a heavy emphasis on Kojève’s interpretation. Apart from this one, the other important points of reference are the very beginning of Chapter Four, as well as Hegel’s understanding of skepticism. The article is organized in such a way that every part focuses on the analysis of at least one crucial quotation, each one constituting a Hegelian attempt to define freedom. It will show that Chapter Four provides us with only the beginning of long considerations on the question of freedom.

Stemming from a reading of Hegel’s account of the struggle for recognition in the Phenomenology of Spirit, Kojève argued that death is the central notion of Hegel’s philosophy. I will discuss several themes in relation to this claim of Kojève’s interpretation of Hegel, namely the themes of freedom, individuality, and historicity. I will also discuss Kojève’s reading that Hegel rejects both all conceptions of the afterlife, and too the belief in the afterlife as a manifestation of the “unhappy consciousness”. I will point out flaws of Kojève’s interpretation throughout.

This articles is a short analysis of the first entry in Aleksander Kozhevnikov’s (Kojève) Diary of a Philosopher, dedicated to the battle of Arginusae and subsequent trial of Athenian generals. A great discrepancy between facts – as presented by young Kozhevnikov – and ancient sources and their interpretation in modern scholarship leads to an attempt to find out the contemporary inspiration of this short text, followed by some remarks on previous interpretations of this very first ‘philosophical’ essay of young Kojève.
