Trends in Research and Development Investment of Transnational Corporations Broken Down by Sector

The article aims to identify trends in R&D activities of transnational corporations in 25 sectors. The analysis covered the top 1000 TNCs in terms of R&D investment in 2003-2015. The investigation confirmed the existence of varying trends between sectors, despite the overall marked increase in R&D investment. The study also determined the characteristics of geographical locations of the top five sectors, strongly dominated by US TNCs. In addition, four groups of sectors were identified depending on the R&D trends observed in the period under analysis. (original abstract)

Celem artykułu jest analiza modernizacji RK w kontekście dwóch teorii; zależności oraz modernizacji. Autor weryfikuje modele teoretyczne i ich użyteczność do interpretacji zmian zachodzących podczas industrializacji. Artykuł jest częścią dyskusji na temat korzyści i zagrożeń wynikających z umiędzynarodowienia.

Korea is the example of the state which development consists of multiple stage. It ran from the substance economy through the period of the extension of the heavy industry, to the industrializing economy and promotion of new technologies. There are a lot of publications which are available on that subject. Despite this, experts are looking for the explanation of factors determine the process of modernization. The problem is still relevant. The purpose of the article is the explanation of modernization process of Korean economy. The article has the theoretical character.

W latach 70. XX w. zauważono rosnący wpływ miast na międzynarodową działalność gospodarczą. Doprowadziło to do powstania koncepcji world city i global city. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie potencjału obszarów metropolitalnych na podstawie liczby oraz ekonomicznej siły firm, umiejscowionych na liście Forbes Global 2000. Na podstawie danych wyników finansowych przedsiębiorstw wyznaczono środek grawitacji dla potencjału ośrodków miejskich w latach 2006 i 2012. Środek grawitacji opracowano na podstawie Międzynarodowego Wskaźnika Potencjału, który ukazuje pozycję miasta, względem standaryzowanej wartości poszczególnych firm. Szczególną uwagę poświecono strukturze sektorowej badanych przedsiębiorstw oraz zmianie w ujęciu ich wielkości i rozmieszeniu w analizowanych latach.

In the 70s of the 20th century the rising impact of cities on the international business was observed. It led to the creation of concepts of “world city” and “global city”. Global control functions of multinational corporations have the strongest impact on global economy. The article presents the potential of metropolitan areas on the basis of the number and the economic potential of companies located on the Forbes Global 2000. On the basis of the data referring to the financial results of companies, the centre of gravity for potential urban centres between 2006 and 2012 was appointed. The International Index of Potential was based on the data showing the potential of the city in relation to the standardized values of the individual companies according to sectors of their business. Particular attention was paid to the sectoral structure of the analyzed companies and their change in terms of their size and deployment of the years analyzed.

Celem artykułu jest próba wykazania, że zmiany zachodzące w strategiach korporacji transnarodowych (KTN) to efekt ich dostosowań do wyzwań stawianych przez ewoluującą gospodarkę światową. Tezą artykułu jest, że filary strategii KTN, będących liderami poszczególnych sektorów, są tożsame. Stanowią odpowiedź na współczesne wyzwania identyczne dla wszystkich branż. Ich istotę stanowi umiejętne budowanie konkurencyjności na rynku międzynarodowym poprzez łączenie konkurencji i współpracy, dlatego korporacje muszą opierać swoje strategie na koncepcjach koherencji, kooperencji, orkiestracji i regulacji. Artykuł prezentuje próbę egzemplifikacji zmian dokonujących się w strategiach współczesnych korporacji. W oparciu o metodologię Grounded Theory Method oraz Social Network Analysis przeprowadzono badanie własne filarów strategii rozwoju 252 KTN sklasyfikowanych w Top 100 non-financial TNCs World Investment Report z lat 1991-2014.

The article attempts to demonstrate that changes in the strategies of transnational corporations (TNCs) is the result of their adaptation to the challenges of an evolving world economy. Thesis of the article is that the developed pillars of the strategy of modern TNCs, which allowed them to become leaders in particular sectors, due to the fact, that they are response to the challenges of the current phase of globalization are universal. They are adequate for the new, but identical for all industries, the requirements of building competitiveness in the international market. Their essence is a skilful combination of competition and cooperation, which is why corporations must base their strategies on the concepts of coherence, coopetition, orchestration and regulations. The article presents an attempt to clarify the nature of the developed model – pillars of the strategy as a result of own research which is an attempt to exemplify the changes taking place in today's corporate strategies. The study was conducted based on the methodology of Grounded Theory Method and Social Network Analysis for 252 TNCs classified in the Top 100 non-financial TNCs World Investment Report from the years 1991- 2014.
