W artykule analizuje się rolę finansów publicznych w genezie kryzysu w strefie euro. We wczesnych interpretacjach przyczyn kryzysu w strefie euro podkreślano negatywną rolę finansów publicznych w narastaniu nierównowag makroekonomicznych, a następnie zaostrzeniu zjawisk kryzysowych po globalnym kryzysie finansowym w 2007 roku. Interpretacja ta pasuje jednak jedynie (i to tylko w części) do przypadku Grecji i Portugalii. Kryzys finansów publicznych wystąpił dopiero w wyniku nierównowagi zewnętrznej, kryzysu bankowego i kryzysu w sektorze realnym, a nie był ich przyczyną.

This article will investigate the role of public finance in the eurozone crisis. The early interpretations of the eurozone crisis causes emphasised the negative role of the public finance in the macroeconomic imbalance growth and then in the worsening of the crisis phenomena after the 2007 global financial crisis. However, this interpretation is only (and partially) adequate for Greece and Portugal case, as the public finance crisis occurred as a result of the external imbalance, the crises in banking and in the real sector instead of being their cause.
