The author emphasizes the necessity for Polish tourists, tourism organizers and popularizes to notice the nonfiction travel writing – especially travel descriptions, the genre called “travel”, as well as travel diaries/logs, itineraries, letters form trips, memoires, travel reportages, chronicles, stories and memories (these genres are characterized in the article) – because currently this form of literary tourism is completely absent on Polish tourist market, yet it is an extremely interesting source of information for people enjoying original ways of traveling the world or for cultural tourists. Moreover, the article includes proposals of tourist routes based on nonfiction travel literature written by Polish travelers or available in Polish. The routes are divided into two groups: a) routes leading to chosen places in the world, covering certain themes and based on chosen travel literary works; b) biographical routes in the footsteps of famous writers-travelers, based on the books describing their trips.

The aim of the article is to reflect upon the issue of biographical tourism, its meaning and development prospects in the context of cultural tourism. It is an attempt to answer the following questions: is biographical tourism currently in bloom or in retreat?, and what could boost its development in the future? Biographical tourism is the consequence of the perennial interest in the life and work of outstanding individuals. It grew on the ground of the long-lasting biographical tradition. Its educational meaning in the society is priceless. An increasing number of offers connected with this form of tourism is visible in large tourist centers. Biographies of literary authors, biographical museums (especially the literary ones) as well as biographical trails enjoy the permanent attention especially among lower and higher education students. They participate more and more actively in the process of creating the biographical tourism (by setting routes, gathering materials about outstanding individuals from their regions, etc.). The knowledge gathered along biographical routes is an attractive way of personally getting to know the places connected with famous characters, and it complements the history of culture and literature syllabi at schools and universities. Biographical tourism has a chance to develop further provided it constantly makes its offer more attractive and comprehensive, adjusts it to the needs of modern tourists and creates wide publicity of the biographical routes.
