The subject of the article is the political history of creation and political activity of the Lutici Confederation on the background of the political activity of the Holy Roman Empire and Poland of that time. Many elements of the then political situation are unclear because of the lack of source information. The author characterises successive changes in war developments, the campaigns fought to subject the dukedom of the Stodorani, co-operation of the Obodrites with the Lutici, and later with the duke of Brenna - Bolilut. The second expedition of Otto III to Rome and the plans 'renovatio imperii Romanorum' moved to the background the offensive actions against the Slavs. It permitted Matilda, ruling in the name of the emperor, to make peace with them, which sealed the loss of the dukedom of the Stodorani by the Empire, which, at that time, must have become a part of the Lutici Confederation and ensured a long-lasting independence of this Confederation. It must be also underlined that the 9th-century Confederation of the Veletians and the 10th-century Lutici Confederation, despite ethnical relationships and an affiliation to them of many identical tribes, nonetheless formed two autonomous political groups. The original paper published with the German summary.
