The article is an attempt to look upon the history of anthropology not only through the diachronic lenses, the popular “science development” category, which has evolutionistic provenience, but also synchronic, through the process of moulding and shifting concepts. Thus, it is possible, to claim Argonauts of the Western Pacific not only as a pioneering “fieldwork monograph” or an origin of the “functionalism theory”, but also as – analogous to Claude Lévi-Strauss’ concept on the place of myth in culture – an alternative of cultural anthropology, or, its archive (in the sense explained by Michael Foucault). In this case the analysis is cast upon the relations between structure and function. It appears that in fact Malinowski’s conception is not as far away from the latter structuralist theories of Alfred Reginald Radcliffe-Brown and Lévi-Strauss. The domination of functionalistic thought in this case implies putting an emphasis onto the ways of realising and sensing the cultural constructs by the natives. As a result, the Argonauts… became primarily a description of a dynamic, living culture; for that reason, the core of the book – uncommonly for anthropological scientific works – is a journey showing the culture in action.

The article fits into thinking about the fieldwork’s reality in its interactive nature, structured by, among others, the form of the cultural contact. Bringing together the knowledge collected in Bronisław Malinowski’s Dzieła and detailed information gathered in diaries, fieldwork notes and letters, allows to perform a reconstruction of an ideal pattern, approximate to real pattern, of the relation which was born between the anthropologist and the natives. The question is, how did the confrontation of multiple systems of praxis and beliefs affect the research and nature of anthropological knowledge? Beginning with the analysis of the meeting subject discourse present in modern anthropology, the author tires to investigate various aspects of Bronislaw Malinowski fieldwork. He attempts to construct an analysis which would pinpoint cultural and historical conditionings of the nature of relation between the anthropologist and “his people”.

Collection of fundamental questions that accompanied Lévi-Strauss during his writing of “ethnographic memories,” a character of doubts and a size of disappointment place his anthropological prose on the side of existential anthropocentricism. During his travels around the world, and especially while visiting “tristes tropiques”, he could see the same invariants that influenced the shape of his “family Europe.” However, if anyone today is willing to get rid of, at least for a moment, existential boringness and discouragement – a trace of past epoch – and devote oneself to the joy of searching, in the work of Lévi-Strauss, for inspiration and motivation to carry on the process of getting familiar with oneself through the Other, they have every right to do so. If the satisfaction coming from gradual familiarization, reading and interpretation can be shared, if a conversation is able to create a possibility to better understanding and agreement, it is definitely worth making use of that opportunity. This “Laboratory of Culture” issue gives you this chance.

Fear is ever-present in man’s history feeling, regardless of their époque or culture. In my paper I would like to examine what and whom the natives of the New Guinea fear as well as how the fears of the Islanders are constructed, basing my reflection upon Bronislaw Malinowski’s research. In my research I will focus particularly on two beings, sorcerers bara’u and witches mulukwausi, for they perform important civil functions in their communities. Researching upon New Guinea’s demonology will be a step further in my attempt to compare the Islander’s culture and the European culture, in order to bring out some invariant rules and mechanisms concerning fear, mutual to attributive culture. This paper has been inspired by Claude Lévi-Strauss’ structuralism.

The article is focusing upon anthropological research of Bronislaw Malinowski and the general purpose of anthropology as a science, in comparison to the problem of reducing anthropological theories by the media and their main public (audience and readership). The paper focuses upon the main purposes behind travelling to the unknown places, and a crisis in the media (travel programs, popular science magazines and travel literature). Nowadays, Malinowski’s postulate of an in-depth insight into a culture has been brought to the maximal exposition of most vivid differences and simultaneously presenting it stylised on proper scientific discourse. Thus, the author concludes, that this transfer of senses causes the recipients focusing on the shallow, superficial orientalism and expected exotics. It happens, because many nowadays travellers carries out Bauman’s conception of the “postmodernist tourist”, who seeks certain, stereotypical, phenomenon during their journey and does not connect them with an intense experiencing the culture and its members. Those questions lead to an attempt of defining if the main criteria of anthropology are still up-to-date.
Ostatecznie okazuje się, iż Don Kichot podróżuje, by aktywnie wpływać na otaczającą go rzeczywistość. Lévi-Strauss podróżuje, by cofnąć się w czasie. Rola etnografa usprawiedliwia to równie ekstrawaganckie przedsięwzięcie.

A starting point of this article is a trace which is a huge intellectual challenge for everybody that reads the French structuralist and wants to understand his creation. In an extended interview Conversations with Claude Lévi-Strauss, he reveals the key to his soul saying that his mind is led by Don Quixote. After such a clear declaration, the interpretative perspective of Tristes Tropique – where a knight-errant evolves into one of the fundamental figures – becomes obvious. Eventually, it turns out that Don Quixote travels in order to influence the surrounding reality actively. In his mind, the reflection of past overlays the presence and impels him to act, ignores the boundaries. Because of that he becomes a madman. Lévi-Strauss travels In order to move back In time. An etnographer role excuses this eccentric undertaking. Procedures imposed by science create the necessary distance but at the same time they become the source of non-fulfillment. The article attempts to answer a question whether Don Quixote – his thoughts and actions influence the things; whether they are a union of That What is analogical. If the answer was yes, what would be the great anthropologist’s dream, whose mind is controlled by a knight-errant?
Tabele synoptyczne i chronologiczne ułatwiają ponadto czytelnikowi dokonanie syntezy treści monografii, bowiem choć dotyczą zazwyczaj wycinka rzeczywistości kulturowej, to prezentowany jest on w szerokim kontekście i zawsze w odniesieniu do innych, badanych i opisywanych zjawisk. Edward Burnetta Tylora, prekursora zastosowania metody statystycznej w badaniach kultury, czy Augustusa Henry’ego Lane-Fox Pitt-Riversa, tworzącego klasyfikacje wytworów kultury materialnej.

The paper elaborates on the topic of ethnographer’s letters of credence, or the topic of primary sources of an ethnographer obtained during the field work. Part of said sources may function as documents legitimizing the ethnographic analyses, as well as research tools which may be used directly during the field work, for example, while making interviews. Making and compiling them also allows verifying the gathered from the informants data, which can also be verified further by the other researchers. Furthermore statistic data, arrays of synoptic, chronologic arrays and various kinds of configurations may be placed in the field work monograph. Concise arrangement of the data and presenting them as an array or a chart may in addition serve as a brief presentation of the important, complicated theoretical conceptions. Arrays of synoptic and arrays of chronologic improve the process of performing the monograph’s synthesis by a reader. Although, those are usually concerning a certain part of the cultural reality, it is presented referring to the vast cultural context and always applied to other presented and researched phenomenon. Only a certain part of the letters of credence was placed by Malinowski in the Argonauts. It was a conscious choice, which, in paradox, allows to lead the readership to the awareness, that completing even the simplest fieldwork monograph is a process requiring prolonged preparations and creating a certain research background, including reflection upon the research method, adjusting the research techniques, knowledge of the previous theories. Arrays, boards, diagrams, and drawings which can be found in the Argonauts and other Malinowski’s works, can be compared to the propositions of the former researchers. For example, Edward Burnett Tylor, precursor in using the statistic method in cultural studies, or Augustus Henry Lane-Fox Pitt-Rivers, creator of the material culture artefacts classifications. Such combination demonstrates the importance of each artefact, element and aspect of culture, in its proper context. Furthermore, it exposes the uniqueness of Malinowski’s functional method against atomism of evolutionary and cultural diffusionism theories. Letters of credence can be, lastly, an Argonauts guidebook, formulated in graphical representations (charts, enumerations, tables) concerning the kula exchange.
Jednak autorzy takich interpretacji nadmiernie akcentują zabiegi pisarskie i w zasadzie stawiają znak równości pomiędzy literaturą piękną a tekstami antropologicznymi, choć mimo wszystko należą one do innych porządków, a kontekst pozatekstowy w antropologii jest ważniejszy aniżeli warstwa narracyjna.

The article referring to a term “ethnographic self-creation” advances an interpretative hypothesis for Tristes Tropiques by Lévi-Strauss. The work of the French anthropologist, created more than a dozen years ago, before the publication of a Diary by Malinowski, can be understood as self-creation of travels and ethnography. An answer for another problem is also searched. It was formulated as follows: why the intimate notes of Malinowski, and not the publication of the work by Lévi-Strauss, made such a fuss in the world of anthropology? Is it because of the naive belief in the fact that intimate notes are some kind of unmasking in relation to science works, and Tristes Tropiques is a construction formed from different types of discourses but well-considered, and is not a manifestation of truth? It turns out that the solution for this problem is a thesis that narrative strategies, regarding anthropologic texts, allow to discover the meanings that were skipped earlier. However, authors of such interpretations exaggerate in stressing literary measures and they actually put an equals sign between belles-lettres and anthropologic texts, despite the fact that they belong to different orders, and that the extratextual context in anthropology I more important that the narrative layer.
W niniejszym omówieniu autorka przedstawia Historię pewnego małżeństwa, pozycję obejmującą zbiór listów Bronisława i Elsie Malinowskich.

In the following analysis the author presents The story of a marriage, a collection of letters exchanged between Bronislaw and Elsie Malinowski, in order to show a character of their correspondence. In the paper author points out some specific forms used in the aforementioned correspondence and highlights its embedment not only in the context of anthropologic research and scientific career of Malinowski. The age they live in, the press, cities, but also foreign culture research and constant travels during their lives are just as important context. The marriage, or rather specific nature it was given by Bronio and Elsie, is a window that allows us to look into their world.
Artykuł jest próbą analizy terminu legendary literature pojawiającego się w League of the Ho-de’-no-sau-nee or Iroquois Lewisa Henry’ego Morgana.

This article attempts to analyse the therm legendary literature which appears in Lewis Henry Morgan’s League of the Ho-de’-no-sau-nee or Iroquois. Author considers individual elements forming the legendary literature: fables, legends and historical traditions and their meaning for operation of the Iroquois culture according to Morgan. The scheme obtained as result of the analysis illustrates the mutual position of those elements towards each other and their function in the Iroquois imagery.
Połączenie myśli Prousta, Henry’ego Davida Thoreau i Lévi-Straussa prowadzi do niespodziewanych wniosków i sugeruje przewartościowanie wyobrażeń rządzących naszą kulturą.

The article defends a thesis that the state of nature demands sacrificing culture, in which we live. It may be a free-will but only partial withdrawal from the field of society as in Henry David Thoreau. It also may be connected with an attempt to get to the end of humankind as in Lévi-Strauss. Here we stand face to face with the structural opposition of nature and culture. We have to make our mind considering the bitter truth which says that the commonly desired and persistent search for Elysium is possible to achieve only as a result of degeneration, withdrawal that doesn’t reject but destroys culture. Joining the thoughts of Proust, Henry David Thoreau and Lévi-Strauss leads to unexpected conclusions, and suggests to revalue the ideas that rule our culture.

The article follows different levels, which the utopia in Tristes Tropiques can function on. The first one would be the level of the world presented, i.e. the world of the “wild” and foreign cultures that Lévi-Strauss met. Does Lévi-Strauss, comparing things Here and There, liken dreams of the man of the West with those of the “wild” man? Making the question clearer: do the cultures existing in Southern America and India (as well as on the pages of Lévi-Strauss’s book) have utopias? The second level is the one of the presentation, i.e. a question about constructing the exotic worlds of Tristes Tropiques by using particular conventions characteristic for utopias or dystopias. On the highest level the author asks whether the theory of Lévi-Strauss is utopian. Deliberations lead to the conclusion that today the Lévi-Strauss’s theory of utopia is out-of-date, but it played its role in the history, at first being a dream which must be realized, and later becoming a reality that must be escaped. There is only a trace, whose durability depends on how many people will decide to follow it along the sea of free existence and unlimited semiosis.
Artykuł poświęcony jest inspirowanej strukturalizmem analizie wypowiedzi dydaktycznych z rozdziału Introduction. The subject, method and scope of this inquiry będącego wstępem do książki Argonauts of the Western Pacific. An account of native enterprise and adventures in the Archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea.

The article is on the subject of analysis inspired by structuralism, of didactic statements in the chapter Introduction. The subject, method and scope of this inquiry which is an entry to the book Argonauts of the Western Pacific. An account of native enterprise and adventures in the Archipelagoes of Melanesian New Guinea. There are shown subsequent stages of learning (conservative learning interrupted by shocks, innovative learning), through which Malinowski helps future ethnographers to go without major difficulties. Based on analysis of the text there are pointed out ways of passing on information and kinds of knowledge used by Bronislaw Malinowski. Author refers to rhetorical abilities of formulating the text that polish researcher gained during his studies at Jagiellonian University.
Wydany w 1967 roku A Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term, czyli Dziennik w ścisłym znaczeniu tego wyrazu Bronisława Malinowskiego (wyd. pol. Kraków 2002) przyczynił się do istotnej zmiany w zastanym paradygmacie antropologicznym – w znacznym stopniu powołał do życia antropologię interpretacyjną Jamesa Clifforda i Clifforda Geertza. Równocześnie rozważa w recenzji manifestacyjny charakter działań kobiet Malinowskiego – drugiej żony, Anny Valetty Hayman-Joyce, która zdecydowała o upublicznieniu A Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term oraz Heleny Wayne, która z kolei opracowała i przygotowała do druku listy swych rodziców, Bronia i Elsie.

Bronislaw Malinowski’s A Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term, Published in 1967 or Dziennik w ścisłym znaczeniu tego wyrazu (Polish edition: Kraków 2002) was the cause for an important change in the already existing paradigm – it considerably inspired James Clifford’s and Clifford Geertz’s interpretative anthropology. In 2012, a polish edition of another Malinowski’s “work” has been published – a correspondence with his first wife, Elsie Masson. The author of a review presents the correspondence with a reflection upon if it will cause a revolution in social sciences. While putting an emphasis on the documentary importance of the edition, the author states, that this time, there will be no revolution, because the hieratic portrait of the master of anthropology was already deconstructed in a revolutionary way through A Diary… Simultaneously, the author ponders upon the demonstrative nature of Malinowki’s women actions – Anna Valetta Hayman-Joyce, who decided on making known to the public A Diary in the Strict Sense of the Term, and Helena Wayne, who complied and prepared for printing the letters of her parents, Bronio and Elsie. Are they an expression of acceptance of the great scholar and his field work practices, or, on the contrary, are they a way of painting a moustache, like Duchamps did once to Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, and initiated the Avant-garde movement? We do not know the answer to this question, although the reception of the The story of a marriage should be observed closely.

This article deals with the matter of problems pervading culture researchers up to date despite their belonging to different schools or researching trends. Lévi-Strauss continuously cherishes his reflections connected with the essence of ethnology, purposefulness and ethics of ethnological research and with the methods that are used in conducting them. Some of the notions present in “Tristes Tropiques”, creating a unified wholeness and still coming back in the book, can be perceived as “methodological – and ethical – deliberations over the nature of studies at first linked to travels, and later put into a framework of modern science – ethnology.” A travel inwards ethnology, which was triggered by a real research travel to Brazil, is multipronged. Its route is marked not only by readings, but also by some elements of material culture, various behaviors and institutions that are often compared by Lévi-Strauss to prior descriptions of Indian tribes.

This article looks on how Lewis H. Morgan’s theory influenced the development of Russian anthropological thought. Morgan (indirectly, yet significantly) was one of the reasons for creation of socially active school of anthropology in the U.S.S.R. Author outlines anthropological historicism in Russian communist period. She shows how political ideologies molded research categories in the U.S.S.R.

The essay attempts to create a philosophy of cognition based on a category of surprise. This surprise was the driving force of expanding the knowledge and a trigger for intellect. It was and still is a ”compulsion” for exploring the world, the reason for scouting, a spark causing a desire to possess light. It is triggered whenever we experience the other, unknown and strange. The author claims that this surprise coming from the travel is based on experiencing the transformation of the three basic categories: time, space and hierarchy. Each of them can intensify the perception of outer stimuli , however, very often leading to deformations in their scope. Each country and each culture have their own language of space and time which is as unique as a spoken language, sometimes even more.
