The place brand is an extremely complex and multidimensional concept. Creation of a strong territorial brand is largely dependent on identifying aspects which define the attractiveness of a given place. As the literature on the subject and studies prepared by experts tend to devote a lot of attention to large urban centres, I decided to analyse how small and middle-sized local government units deal with the brand building process. The aim of the study was to determine the aspect of attractiveness that build identities of small and medium-sized communes (gminas), the dimensions of identities of such communes, and the typological classes of communes defined on the basis of these dimensions. Local authorities tend to perceive place brands primarily through the prism of key attributes of individual places. Natural attributes and attractions, geographical location, events, and sport facilities are the building blocks of attractiveness for small and middle-sized local government units. The key dimensions of the communes' identities are the aspects of their attractiveness in terms of settlement, tourism and economic activity. The conducted analysis allowed also to distinguish communes with strong and distinctive identities, communes whose identities are defined primarily by their offer dedicated to the residents, ones defined most strongly by their business and cultural offers, communes whose identity is not very clear and requires intervention, as well as communes with a high level of tourist attractiveness and good recreational offerings.

From an anthropological point of view, the elaboration of identity mechanisms (rooted in monuments and landscapes) can be deconstructed in order to understand the impact of cultural heritage upon inhabitants. This study, based on the French city of Grasse (French Riviera), demonstrates how cultural heritage is used in the creation of local identity and how it can impact social, cultural, economical and political fields. Cultural heritage is used here to understand identity strategies. It is established as a point of reference and a local marker. It legitimizes social order and validates local identity. This situation is not an exception in the area, and these cultural constructions can be seen in others touristic cities on the French Riviera.

Artykuł dotyczy relacji między jednostką a miejscem. Kanwę rozważań stanowią wyniki badań przeprowadzonych wśród mieszkańców małych społeczności lokalnych północno-wschodniego pogranicza Polski. W artykule prezentuję analizę statystyczną czynników warunkujących występowanie tożsamości lokalnej. Analizy dotyczą również zależności pomiędzy tożsamością lokalną a zachowaniami obywatelskimi badanych. Zachowania obywatelskie wyrażają się między innymi udziałem w lokalnych władzach, tworzeniu sąsiedzkiej kooperacji oraz aktywnym uczestnictwie w rozwiązywaniu różnych problemów lokalnych.

The article concerns the relationship between an individual and a place. The framework of the analysis are the results of research carried out among the dwellers of small local communities living in the north-eastern border of Poland. The article presents the statistical analysis of factors determining the existence of local identity. The analyses presented in the paper also concern the relationship between the local identity and civic behaviour of the respondents. The civic behaviour is expressed primarily in the participation in local authorities, creating neighbour cooperation and active participation in solving various local problems.

Mieszanki rozkładów są stosowane wówczas, gdy zbiór obserwacji charakteryzuje się nadmiernym rozproszeniem. W literaturze najczęściej są spotykane mieszanki rozkładów normalnych (model-based clustering). W referacie zostaną przedstawione mieszanki rozkładów wielomianowych oraz wyniki ich zastosowań do podziału studentów o podobnych postawach wobec województwa śląskiego (jego tradycji, kultury, możliwości rozwoju itd.). Badania zostaną przeprowadzone za pomocą pakietu mixtools programu komputerowego R.
