The fern/bracken is one of the most popular plants in the European mythological herbarium. The image of the plant takes specific features not only in different cultures, but also in different “registers” of the tradition, for example, in oral and handwritten. The article is based on the analysis of the папоротник без сердца (‘fern without a heart/core’) descriptions in Russian handwritten herbals of the 17th-18th centuries. The history of the text, its transformation (in particular, the penetration of folklore motives into the handwritten text) and reasons of the transformation (adaptation of the text to current knowledge, changes in the social environment, etc.) are considered.
