A meta-analysis was carried out to demonstrate the existence of publication bias in research on the relationship between measures of fluid intelligence and working memory. Reanalysis of data collected in Ackerman, Beier, & Boyle, 2005 was conducted. A heterogeneous distribution of correlation coefficients in the absence of asymmetry in the distribution of coefficients was observed. According to the author of the analysis, there are no arguments for the presence of publication bias in this particular set of results drawn from research on intelligence and working memory.

The paper deals with the history of development of evaluating methods abroad which consisted of three main stages. The first stage is characterized by domination of experimental tradition, the second one - by the appearance of new alternatives (high-quality investigations, meta-analysis and program theory), and the third one - by integration of qualitative and quantitative methods. Special attention is given to the meta-analysis and program theory. The meta-analysis is a set of statistical methods for uniting the results of different quantitative investigations. Its main purpose is to obtain a comprehensive conclusion as to the available empirical data concerning the certain theme.

Measuring the efficiency of public higher education institutions has become a subject of many studies. We analyse these studies using meta-analysis and identify the most commonly adopted inputs and outputs in the DEA and SFA models (e.g. the number of students, graduates, and academic staff). Data obtained from these studies were used for meta-regression analysis. We analyse the effect of independent variables (sample size, the number of inputs and outputs, method used, model orientations, returns to scale and to the country) on the average technical efficiency of public higher education institutions. Finally, we use this model to predict the average technical efficiency of the Czech and Slovak public higher education institutions.

The author characterizes selected aspects of methods of literature analysis and criticism in library and information science and observes a significant increase of researchers' interest in this research method in 21st century informatology and library studies. Two basic roles of literature analysis and criticism in scholarly research are analyzed - the auxiliary (heuristic) and the independent (knowledge-creating) one. Stages and variants of the analysis are described, including a traditional analysis, systematic review and meta-analysis. The closing part of the article includes results of pilot research on selected properties and features of literature analysis and criticism in contemporary library and information science.
