Under the current in interwar Poland legal solutions, deliberate and unjustified medical abortion was punishable by criminal law. Based on the preserved documentation of selected court cases from the subordinate jurisdiction of the District Court in Siedlce, it was found that in the most cases of abortion dealing participated midwives, medics or unqualified persons, providing medical services illegally. Treatments conducted by them involved the use of mechanical methods involving the irritation of the uterine cavity, the removal of the embryo and the surrounding fetal membranes or puncture these membranes. Persons performing abortions used both medical instruments and everyday objects. In the abortion dealing also used pharmacological methods, involving the use of various types of drugs and chemicals showing the abortifacient effect, which were administered to patients orally and vaginally. These tools and preparations were also used by pregnant women who have made self-abortion.
