The contribution presents yet unpublished ceramic pipes from several, in some cases already known, archaeological sites in Slovakia. These, in fragments preserved items, have not been systematically, but randomly collected during various occasions (field archaeological excavation, amateur collections, author‘s leisure time activities). Analysed finds, considering their parallels in Slovakia, respectively in a broader area of former Hungarian Kingdom, generally belong to common types of stub-stemmed pipes. In the proposed set are pipes from the time interval since the turn of the 17th and 18th until the 2nd half of the 19th century. The author of article believes, that find of a pipe can indicate some activities from the Modern Age (exploitation of resources, pastoralism, search for antiques, etc.) on an archaeological site with settlement from the prehistory or the early history.

The paper focuses on the communicating capacity of seals of superiors of Moravian monasteries at the end of middle ages and in the early modern age. It pays attention to the intention of the seal owners, but also to the existing seal matrices and to the impressions made by them. At the beginning an idea of the seal owner to get a seal matrix stands in the process of making seal. Paper follows different motives, which finally led to the creating of matrix and its usage. Almost every seal contains more levels of information. Information is connected and operates together, but not all of them are generally understandable and not all of them have constant validity. Next to the identifying function, which is closely connected to the credibility, legal force and validity, it is necessary to understand the seal as a mean of representation as well. Last but not least we can see the seal as a mirror to the contemporary historical context, which reflects the place of its origin and the position of its owner in the contemporary social structures.

The research of gallows, which are part of larger execution sites, has not yet been widely used in Slovakia. The interest of the professional public lies rather on the basis of excerpts from historical sources for the exercise of criminal law in individual settlements. In Western European countries, execution research is of long-term interest of an interdisciplinary nature. This paper brings summarizing findings related to research on execution sites in Europe for their deeper penetration into the professional environment in Slovakia. At the same time, it provides opportunities to use existing historical and archaeological sources in the interpretation of execution sites located in the modern cultural landscape of Slovakia. Historical map data are of great importance for the location of execution sites, from which we obtain important spatial data by mutual comparison. The research from the position of landscape archaeology brings knowledge about the heterogeneous nature of objects occurring in execution sites and the very unique character of the spiritual culture associated with these areas. This finding is substantiated by our own field research of localized execution sites in the Gemer-Malohont region. The authors consider it important that future research into execution sites become an integral part of post-medieval archaeology.

The interests of historians, archaeologists, ethnographers and conservationists overlap during research of mills as medieval and modern technical buildings. For archaeologist, a question of research is interesting in connection with the reconstruction of historical landscape. We analysed historical maps and historical written records as well as results of archaeological field survey during the research of mills in Kostoľany valley. Due to synthesis of obtained knowledge we were able to localize five historical water mills with a rich history situated on the stream Drevenica in Kostoľany valley. However, there are still many questions to be answered.

The aim of the article is to characterize the church administration of the south-western part of Slovakia, the so called Podhorský deanery in the early modern era. The church administration has been documented on the basis of the analysis of canonical visitations which provide an authentic image of the social-political and religious situation in the region from the 1560s to the 1650s. According to the visitations from 1560 – 1564, a lot of presbyteries had either no priest or they had one who violated the church discipline. Situation in the church organization of the studied area changed in the first half of the 17th century. Visitations inform us not only about Roman Catholic parishes but also about conditions in the former Roman Catholic, yet at the time of visitations, Protestant or Anabaptist settlements. On the basis of the studied material, we came to the conclusion that changes in the church administration occurred on the arch deanery level, but mostly on the level of deaneries, which means that – in comparison with the past - in the chosen time was a deanery formed by different parishes and filial churches. Reformation and subsequent – though not very fast – establishment of the chain of Protestant and Calvin parishes also influenced the former Roman Catholic Church administration.

This article summarizes the results of the author ś thesis as well as reflects some new facts from his doctoral work. The main goal was to create the evolutional schemes of pottery from cities, castles, bulwarks, manors and similar fortified high-placed locations of North-western Slovakia. Tiles and pipes, as part of potter’s production, are included too. The whole described collection dates back to a relatively long time period, from the High Middle Ages to the end of the Early Modern Age (13th – 18th centuries). The secondary aims include the relations of pottery production to the neighbouring areas (South-western Slovakia, Silesias, North-eastern Moravia, and Lesser Poland), the creation of ceramic-material classes of pottery and the percentage and typological comparison of ceramics from cities, castles and fortified high-placed locations.

The paper brings information about an extensive set of archaeological finds of a pick-up character from the village Bohdanovce nad Trnavou (Trnava district) which contains, in addition to a small number of pottery fragments and iron products, a large amount of copper and bronze artefacts. They include, for example, fragments of a dirk from Early Bronze Age, coin ligature of Kapos type, torso of a brooch of joint construction and other artefacts from the La Tène period, a larger amount of coins and brooches, as well as military artefacts and ornamental fittings of furniture from the Roman period, remnants of artefacts from the migration of nations period, late Avar cast fittings and strap-ends, a considerable number of belt sets from the 13th – 14th centuries, numerous modern age artefacts and devotional objects. The authors believe that the rich occurrence of fragments of various bronze artefacts, bronze ligatures, lead weights and a serial occurrence of bronze buckles from Middle Ages indicate the existence of a jewellery workshop from High as well as Late Middle Ages in the site. The workshop of this kind could have existed here as early as in the Roman period. In addition to the description and analysis of the mentioned archaeological finds the paper is concerned with the problem of finds by detectorists. Addressing the problem is considered to be urgent by the authors!
